(Re)connectingTena koutou ki te whanau o Mount Albert Grammar School.
A warm welcome to the 2024 academic year with special greetings to families, students and staff new to our community.
It has been wonderful to enjoy some ‘traditional’ summer weather, which will hopefully ensure students and staff return refreshed and energised for the year ahead.
This morning our MAGS staff gathered for a walking tour and a chance to learn about some of the people and stories important to the history of our school.
|
Beginning on the ASB MAGS Farm, the staff were treated to a presentation by Matua Hohepa Renata (pictured above), sharing the pre-European history relating to our Maunga – Owairaka. We all then moved up to Alberton, where Heritage Manager Rendell McIntosh led an informative session outlining the settler history of the Kerr-Taylor family and their influence on the early days of MAGS and the Farm.
Finally, we moved back down to our school cenotaph (flagpole), where Albertian, Board member and war historian Greg Moyle shared the fascinating yet sobering story of the service (and loss) of Albertians in military conflicts over the years.
As we begin our 103rd year as a school, today’s historical tour is a reminder that all who enjoy connection to the MAGS of today are also wedded to the people of the past. And both staff and students now have a wonderful opportunity to continue to grow this history in the time ahead.
We are certainly more than ready for 2024!
We wait now with great anticipation for the arrival of our MAGS young people and the life they will breathe back into our school.
Enjoy the Anniversary Weekend.

Keep up to date with school news and events on the MAGS App – free from the App Store or Google Play. MAGS parents can instantly access school announcements, Daily Notices, the Kamar portal, teachers’ contact details, and notify the School if your child is absent. When notifying absences, you need to load your child’s Student ID number. You should only need to do this once, and this helps us record absences more easily. Parents and students can check the School Calendar and sync chosen events with their own Calendar, and choose Groups about which they wish to receive Alert Notifications. There are links to the MAGS Newsletter, Sports, Maps, and more … Search for “SchoolAppsNZ”, and load the app on to your phone. You can then search for and add as many schools as you want so you can receive alerts from multiple schools. If you are having trouble with this, click here to see how. |
