November Newsletter

From the Rector

It’s incredible how fast this year has gone, but when we stop and look at the achievements and reflect on the year, it has been fantastic for the school and its young men.

Our seniors are now through their exam period, and I would like to acknowledge the levels of engagement we have seen both in attendance and perseverance. I hope that this is reflected in positive results for these young men in the new year.

As the events and awards season builds up, we are very proud to see how many of our boys represent themselves, and us, with scholarships, cultural achievements, and sporting honours across the city. Showing, once again, how well rounded our students and graduates are as they take their places in society.

We have had class groups visiting a number of venues this month, experiencing education beyond the classroom, and I thank the staff of the school for continuing to offer these opportunities to broaden horizons and learning opportunities.

Equally valuable are opportunities that showcase skills not always obvious, allowing a student the chance to move beyond the comfort zone and try something new. The current junior production of ‘Elf’ is a prime example of that. We can see from the quality and involvement of our young men, and the young women from Southland Girls’ High School, that the future of stage productions in our community is strong. It was a fantastic show enjoyed by all who were able to attend.

We look forward now to our own prizegiving and a full reflection on the amazing things that our young men achieve.

I wish you all well and thank you all for your continued support of the school.

Simon Coe
Rector

BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

From the start of 2024, all Year 11, 12 and 13 students will require their own device in class. We will be applying a blended e-learning approach, using traditional approaches to teaching and learning, as well as using ICT to support and facilitate learning.

All students will be required to sign a User Agreement before their device can be used at school, which will be provided electronically, via SchoolBridge, at the beginning of Term 1.

An outstanding achievement - well done gentlemen! (Pictured above with Careers Advisor Chris Marsh.)

Winning Writing - Oshadha Perera

Oshadha Perera has won another writing competition. His short story Three Stars was the winner of the Rangathai category in the Anna-Marie Chin Writing Competition, in the Queenstown Writer's Festival. The judge Michael Bennett said that he 'should absolutely be encouraged to write, in any way possible.'

JUDGE'S FEEDBACK
This is beautiful writing. Your writing creates a deeply emotional experience for the reader that is even more evocative because your writing style is so sparse and understated. The central metaphor of looking for Orion in the skies, which was such an act of love and togetherness for the narrator and her family when mum was here, is very powerful - and the writer demonstrates they have absolutely terrific writing instincts by using this uniting metaphor as a deeply moving echo in the first and last sentences of this story. This whole piece is very strong, and some moments are just stunning. "Sometimes, I watched you stare into the fridge" is just outstanding writing that paints a complete picture of grief in one sentence. I mean this sincerely - please, please, please consider creative writing as a career; be it novels, poetry, screenwriting, playwriting, or short fiction. You have what it takes.
