13 June 2025 Newsletter

The week has been pride week and one of the main events was a non uniform day where students were asked to bring in a can of non-perishable food for the foodbank. We had a great response and several boxes of canned food will be delivered to the Food Bank on Friday afternoon.

Pride Week is an opportunity to celebrate the diversity within our community as well as an opportunity to acknowledge the historical sacrifice that people have made to attain rights and equality. Pride Week helps us learn and in particular understand what some people face just for being themselves. It teaches us how to be kind, supportive friends and how important it is to stand up against bullying or discrimination. When we celebrate Pride, we send a message that our school values every student.

Matariki breakfast celebration
Next Tuesday (17 June) we will start our celebration of Matariki with a breakfast and cultural performance. A form has been sent out to register and this will help ensure that we cater for the correct numbers. This is an important time of the year where we celebrate the arrival of the new year and reflect on the past year. I hope that you will join us for this special event.

Former student success
An article appeared in the Southern Rural Life newspaper this week celebrating the achievement of former student Callum Maze who has just been awarded Apprentice of the Year at the Southern Wood Council’s Forestry Awards. Callum started to gain experience of the forestry industry whilst a student at South Otago High School by undertaking a work experience placement with Roxburgh Logging who now employ him. Congratulations to Callum for his achievement.

Climate awareness
Today I have had the pleasure of taking a group of students to a presentation on climate change hosted by NIWA scientists. During the journey to and from the presentation it was interesting to hear the future destinations for the senior students. All are looking to attend university either at Otago or Canterbury. For some, the impact or climate change has a specific interest in their preferred course of study. It is great that our students have this opportunity to hear from specialists who can enthuse students about their future prospects.

Covid in our community
Last week I mentioned that there were covid cases in our community. This trend is continuing. To support a strong healthy community I would ask that people who are unwell follow the current guidelines. Full details can be found at: https://info.health.nz/conditions-treatments/infectious-diseases/covid-19/if-you-have-covid-19
If you test positive, self isolate for 5 days with day zero being the first day you felt unwell or tested positive (whichever came first)
Isolation means staying at home and avoid contact with household members
Report a positive RAT result (0800 222 478)

Finally
I hope to see as many whanau as possible at our Matariki breakfast next week. Wew know that early mornings can be challenging and we welcome suggestions of other ways that we can gather as the school community to celebrate this special time of the year. Many of our students will continue the festivities at a special community event at the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening. I hope that you may be able to join us for that event as well.

Have a good weekend.
