Talofa Lava

This week we have celebrated Samoan Language week which has an increasing importance to our community with a significant increase of Samoan families moving into our district. In assembly a number of students spoke in assembly about Samoan culture. This was followed by the beautifully sung Samoan National Anthem by all of our Samoan students.

During the week we have had a number of events including a visit to Dunedin to hear about traditional tattooing, a visiting practicing Samoan artist and finishing the week with some local food!

The opportunity to learn about different cultures and may be a little of the language is so important so as to develop understanding and tolerance for different cultures and beliefs.

Kepler hike
This week was supposed to start with students completing part of the Kepler track in Fiordland. Due to unforeseen circumstances the trip was delayed but I understand that despite the weather it was great experience and the students enjoyed the adventure.

Rostering home
For Wednesday we had to make the difficult decision to roster home the Year 13 students. In total we had 10 teachers unavailable due to illness and other commitments. This is nearly a quarter of our teaching staff. Thank you for your assistance and we do appreciate that rostering any year group home is not an ideal situation.

Covid in our community
There are increasing numbers of covid cases in our community. Whilst many restrictions have been lifted please do be mindful that spreading this infection may cause significant harm to those who have underlying health conditions. Please help to protect the health of our community.

Finally
Very soon we will be celebrating Matariki. Once again the school will be marking this event and we will be sharing details of how we will be acknowledging this important time of the year in the next week. I hope that whanau will join us for this celebration.

Have a good weekend.
