The sense of winter well and truly arriving, hit me whilst standing on the sidelines of an away game on Wednesday after school. The temperature had dropped as we cheered on the Girl's Soccer team. Yet earlier in the day, the sun’s warmth had made a winter’s day very pleasant. It reminded me of the Kiwi adage that Aotearoa can experience four seasons in one day at any time of the year, which in turn, reminded me of the Crowded House song “Four seasons in one day”: Even when you're feeling warm The temperature could drop away Like four seasons in one day On a deeper level, the song touches on the fact that we as individuals can experience a range of emotions and experiences as well as different highs and lows like the changing seasons.
Later that same evening, the Whānau Hui celebrated milestones for Terms 1 and 2. Amongst all of the highlights of this evening was Delta Johns’ practice speech for her upcoming Manu Kōrero Competition. Delta hit the hearts of those in attendance with a powerful message about the taniwha inside all of us and the importance of support for everyone. The voices of our rangatahi filled the room through the evening with inspiration, warmth, hope and aroha through powerful waiata, haka and korero. Seeing our Māori Senior Leadership Group, Ngā Toa o Mua (Warriors of the Future) receive their badges in recognition of this role was uplifting, they led the entire night as part of their responsibility with mana. Not least were those juniors who were acknowledged for their manawanui and progress in their achievement, earning the recognition and honour of being awarded their badges of success. Congratulations to all.
These types of celebrations are so important for all of us. It is a chance to recognise the outstanding milestones of students’ journeys here at Waitākere College. Not only do we see students progress through the actual, physical seasons year-on-year; we also see the more symbolic progress through their own seasons which leads toward adulthood and success.
