Smile and the world smiles with you |
The Ka Ora, Ka Ako, Healthy School Lunches programme that launched on Monday has not only brought to our students a full puku but also smiles and happiness. There has been a clear increase in positivity to our interval break time. In talking with students each day monitoring its rollout, I have heard such great feedback: “It’s mean as”, “This is so good”, “Are we getting it again tomorrow too?”, “Yep, it's sweet as miss”. These were just today's comments. It makes us all smile at Waitākere College knowing that our students are receiving a hot meal during the school day and that they are set up for the learning ahead. If you wish to give us feedback and your thoughts we also welcome that. A reminder that hot meals will be provided every day and it is a choice for all students.
Just like food and nutrition is vital for our physical body and minds to operate, so is working on and developing our thoughts about how to think with a growth mindset and have positive self-talk to enable us to be the best we can be in any given challenges that we may find difficult.
In the same way as music has the capacity to uplift our spirits, the concept of positive self-talk is a great skill to practise for everyone, particularly for our young people. Positive self-talk is a skill that will enable them to give every effort and not let negative thoughts like “I can’t”, “This is too hard” or “I'm never gonna get it" get in the way of not just learning but any challenge they come across in life.
I’m not talking about a devil or angel concept but the interval voice that tells us what we’re capable of. It's the voice that says things like “I can do this”, “I’m going to give it my best shot” or “It's ok I'll give it another go” are some examples I have given at assemblies this week. I set the students a challenge to first be able to recognize unhelpful negative self-talk and then work on making sure they can turn them into positive ones.
Mr Shanahan often talks to the staff about the can-do attitude and “Go out there and make a difference” as a mantra when he ends our staff briefings. So outwardly conveying your positive self-talk will inspire and influence your friends and whānau to be the best they can be.
Therefore, it’s important for us all to recognise the power of positivity. Not only within ourselves but to the world around us. Many of us understand the philosophy of karma, that what you give out to the world you will get back in the same form. So let’s do one act of kindness this week and spread some aroha.
He aroha whakatō, he aroha puta mai - If kindness is sown, then kindness you shall receive.
