Is our Backbone Helping our Wishbone?

As we enter the final three weeks of Term 1, it's essential to focus on achieving our goals for this term. Our "Wishbone" represents the successful completion of Achievement or Unit Standards based on the work and content learned throughout Term 1.

Students in NCEA Level 1 will be reaching key milestones in each subject, leading to a final assessment or test that will typically earn them 5 credits representing one-third of their course. Family and whānau should encourage their child to review their milestone progress in preparation for the senior course whānau interviews on Wednesday March 26, 2025.

Students in Levels 2 and 3 may be completing standards worth 3 to 4 credits this term.
Each student should reflect on whether they are putting in the necessary effort, which we refer to as their "Backbone." This effort is crucial to achieving academic rewards.

Last week, I discussed Backbone, emphasizing its two essential components: Structure and Discipline. Structure is critical, while discipline is your superpower.

We covered Structure last week, so let’s focus on discipline now. Discipline involves:

  • Completing the necessary work to achieve each milestone of the standards.
  • Setting aside time in your calendar to complete tasks, both in and out of class.
  • Utilizing your planner to manage daily and weekly assignments to ensure work is completed during class or at tutorials.
  • Sacrificing leisure time (with friends, etc.) to complete tasks.

By combining good Structure with determined Discipline, you will be on your way to reaching your goals. Remember, your backbone of structure and discipline will help you achieve your wishbone.
