Kia Ora Tatou This week I have seen a number of students as they have left the examination room following their NCEA assessment. Nearly all of them are feeling positive and felt that they had done well. I look forward to seeing the student results in January next year. Teacher only day Thank you to whanau and the community for your patience to enable teachers to engage in professional development. I realise that this type of disruption can be challenging but the involvement in professional development for teachers is essential for teachers as the new NCEA standards roll out. Junior ‘have a go’ sports This week a lot of our year 9 and 10 students have been participating in a range of different sports. Teachers have given their time to transport and supervise students and the opportunity for students to participate is greatly appreciated. Special thank you to Pam Hannah for her organisation and giving her own time to enable students to have such a great experience Junior assessments In line with external assessments, curriculum areas have reviewed their end of year assessment practices to bring these into line with future expectations for NCEA. As a result, the traditional exam, which covered a full year of work has largely disappeared. For many subjects the end of year assessment will be a portfolio of work or a topic assessment which will be completed in class time. For Maths, English and Science there will be a formal exam. Again this may only focus on a particular topic or may be assessing a range of skills and abilities. Teachers have been talking to students about how they will be assessed for the end of year and the format for the assessment. Parents who would like to know more should contact their child’s class teacher for more detailed information. Covid-19 We still have a steady number of students who are becoming confirmed Covid cases. The school is doing it’s part by ensuring that there is soap, hot water and drying facilities in toilets. We also continue to have hand sanitizer dispensers. Obviously, sometimes the soap or sanitizer may run out. Students can report this to the office and we will fill dispensers etc. Parents/whanau please do reinforce good hygiene practices at home as well. No one wants to be unwell going into the holiday and I am sure that students do not want to miss the opportunity to participate in the end of year activities. Finally Next week, we start the last two full school weeks of the school year. I am looking forward to a positive finish to the school year. Whanau should be encouraging students to spend a little of their own time preparing for assessments so that they finish feeling positive about their own studies. Ka kite ano |
