31 January 2025 Newsletter

Kia Ora Tatou

It has been a pleasure to welcome our new cohort of Year 9 students into the school this morning. They were greeted by a number of Year 13 students who will be their peer support buddies and are the future leaders of the high school for 2025. For the first day the Year 9’s have been learning their way about the school and now have a copy of their timetable. They have also followed their Monday schedule for today so on Monday morning when the full school is on site they should be able to find their way about the school easily.

Senior course confirmation
Whilst Friday was the first day of school for the year 9 students, during Wednesday and Thursday the senior students of Y11-13 were completing their course confirmation. Once again it was good to see a large number of students attending with whanau. Talking to some of the Y12 and Y13 students it was also very pleasing to hear of their positive NCEA results for 2025.

Contact information
During the senior course confirmation, whanau were asked to check that the contact information that the school has on file is correct. On Friday the Year 9 students were given a copy of the information to take home and for whanau to check. Year 10 will receive this information for whanau to check on Monday.

The school does need positive confirmation that the information we have is correct. In particular we need the street address, cell phone and email addresses to be accurate as these will be our means of communication. Please ensure that the sheet is returned (with corrections if necessary) by your child to their mentor teacher.

Building and maintenance work
During the summer break the school site has been busy with external painting for buildings continuing, D Block accessibility being improved and other internal maintenance work continuing. We are expecting that in the next couple of weeks the first part of the D Block modifications will be completed.

We acknowledge that builder working can be a distraction but the investment and inconvenience is a good investment to improve the quality of facilities at South Otago High School.

Mihi Whakatau
On Monday morning we will be formally welcoming all of our new students and staff to South Otago High School with a mihi whakatau. It will be the first time that the whole school will assemble together and is a great event. Whanau of new students who would like to attend and support our new students are welcome. However there is very limited space as we expect about 530 students to be attending.

Finally
After the long summer break it is good to be back in school. I am looking forward to seeing the full school on site next week. As I have said to the teachers during our teacher only day earlier this week, it is the people here that make South Otago High School such a special place.
