Thursday 18th May 2023 | Term 2 Week 4

Kia ora e te whānau,

Last week, our students showcased their incredible skills and sportsmanship at the Southern Area Schools Tournament. We would like to congratulate all our competitors, including those from other schools who displayed exceptional talent and dedication. The spirit of healthy competition was truly inspiring, and we appreciate the positive atmosphere that prevailed throughout the event. We have received some lovely positive feedback from their billets too! Our students have achieved remarkable success in various sports. Our school emerged victorious in basketball, football, e-sports, chess, rippa rugby and squash. Our athletes' commitment and hard work paid off, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. Well done, team! Following the regional tournament, we are delighted to announce that eleven of our students have been selected to represent the Southern Area Schools at the upcoming National Area School Tournament in Rangiora during the upcoming holidays. Congratulations to Ralph Henderson, Jackson Parata, Dave White, Cameron Smith, Jack McLellan, Urgen Tamang, Finn McKinley, Sadie Mason, Kiara Thyne, Riley Beattie and Hazel Mason. We wish them the best of luck and know they will make our school proud. Go, Twizel!

This week has been a celebration of Bully Free Week across New Zealand. Our school’s programme included in-class, whole-school and house activities to raise awareness about the importance of awhinataka - kindness, empathy, and respect in our school community. The activities included making a house kindness quilt, ‘filling the bucket’ with good deeds (FYI: the bucket overflowed!!), a colouring competition, awhinataka bingo and much, much more. We hope these efforts foster a safe and inclusive environment for all our students. At this Friday's assembly, prizes will be drawn to acknowledge the students who actively participated in the week of Bullyfree activities. On a related note, we want to remind everyone that Friday is Pink Shirt Day, a global initiative against bullying. We encourage all students and staff to wear pink shirts to support creating a bully-free environment. Together, we can make a difference and spread kindness throughout our school.

Following our meeting this week, I’d like to thank the Board of Trustees for their invaluable support during the relief ban. The Board have allocated additional funding to ensure that, in the short term, we do not have to send students home when we cannot cover classes with existing teachers. This funding allows us to buy in relief staff when necessary. This solution is sustainable only in the short term due to budget limitations. Nonetheless, we appreciate the Board's commitment to our students' education and well-being. I’m sure parents will appreciate the full commitment to keeping our students in school for every moment possible.

A few 'heads up' items for your attention:

  • Bookings for the upcoming Conferences are now open, so please make sure to schedule your appointment to discuss your child's progress.
  • Year 11 students will be home rostered on Thursday, May 25th
  • The Senior Formal, 'A Night in Paris,' will be held at the Ben Ohau Golf Club on Friday, May 26th.

He waka eke noa,
