Fakaalofa lahi atu ki a mutolu oti (Greetings everyone)
Our senior students have entered the sprint to the finish of the academic year. There remain a matter of days before students head off on study leave ahead of the NCEA Examinations and NZ Scholarship. Threading through this intense period of study and revision are the numerous celebratory events that mark the breadth of our school. Students excelling across our Pillars will be recognised at a number of upcoming prizegivings and awards dinners. Throw in the annual School Ball and it certainly promises to be a celebratory time for our MAGS community.
2024 has seen MAGS return to ‘full noise’, with students engaging in activities right across the school. It’s been the busiest year since 2019 – and credit must go to our students for the energy and enthusiasm they bring into school each day.
But the ultimate measure of success will be realised in the examination room as opposed to the ballroom!
As we rightly celebrate a fantastic year to date, let’s make sure we also stay faithful to our core business of academic success. Preparation will be the key here.
Eighteen days (and counting) until NCEA examinations begin!
Have a good weekend.

Young Enterprise Finalists |
Two student-led businesses have been selected as Regional Finalists in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). PetProTech, an innovative business team operated by seven students, showcases sustainability through NFC-enabled pet tags, crafted from 100% recycled plastic filament. These tags provide an efficient solution for reuniting pets with their owners, combining technology with environmental responsibility. Pictured above are team members Nishka Arora (CEO), Grace Moon (CFO), Venus Mah (Finance Manager), Elijiah Poliko (Communications Manager), Eli Betham (Human Resources), Krrish Patel (Operations Manager) and Mariam Ketan (CMO). Additionally, 5% of PetProTech's profits are donated to the SPCA, reflecting the team’s commitment to making a positive impact in the community. Follow their journey on Instagram at @officialpetprotech Tipu Seedlings will also be at the regional finals next Monday at the University of Auckland. The team's product is a new modern gardening method, called seed bombs, which are composed of powdered clay, nutrient rich compost, and native seeds, allowing consumers to help biodiversity efforts by dispersing the product in barren areas. The product is packaged in 100% recyclable packaging, and the business has also partnered with the I Got Planty store in Mount Eden and Oke Charity to bring the product to the retail market. Pictured below are team members Ryan Antia (CEO), Joel Paterson (Finance), Sehjot Matharu (Marketing), Harman Aujla (Production) and Alex Hogg (Communications). Absent: Jack Folland (Sales). You can follow Tipu Seedlings' story through their Instagram account: @tipu.seedlings |
Treeway Music Lifts Spirits |
Around 30 walkers joined the STEPS hikoi down from Owairaka maunga as part of Auckland’s Heritage week. Tupuna Maori Authority offered a karakia, and walkers looked out to see Waitītiko Meola Creek below. Former MAGS teachers Roy Clements and Christine Hallett met with Headmaster Mr Drumm, then greeted the walkers on Kerr Taylor Reserve. They led the group towards musical performances on the Roy Clements Treeway played by six Senior Music students, directed by HOD Music Mr Watson. You can hear some of the items here Mr Watson said, "Many thanks to the musicians and all the walkers. "Watch this space to see the movie! Yes, the performances on the Roy Clements Treeway were filmed."

From November 17, the OuterLink, 64 and 650 bus services are changing. Changes to the OuterLink will affect the journey to school for some students. The OuterLink will no longer travel between St Lukes and Newmarket through Epsom and Mt Eden. It will continue to travel between St Lukes, Mt Albert, Pt Chevalier, Herne Bay, the city centre, Parnell, and Newmarket. The 64 bus from Newmarket, Mt Eden Village, Valley Road and Walters Road will be extended to St Lukes via Sandringham Road. The 650 bus, running along the full length of Balmoral Road and St Lukes Road, will become the 65. The route will not change but it will run every 15 minutes throughout the day, seven days a week. You can see a full breakdown of the changes here along with route advice.

We are excited for 2025 and our new cohort of international students. We have students arriving from the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Chile, Argentina, Germany and Italy. Stays vary from one term through to a full year. A host is expected to provide a clean and comfortable bedroom with bed, wardrobe (built-in or free-standing) and drawers, linen and towels, desk and lamp, heating in room and three meals a day plus snacks and laundry. The application process involves police vetting for all family members over 18 and the completion of an application form. This is followed by a home visit from the school. This helps us to know a little more about your family’s interests and lifestyle and enables us to make a well-informed student match. If you would like some further information, or to receive the application forms, please email [email protected] |
Curlers' Strong Showing at Nationals |
The Curling Boys team of Samuel Reeves, Felix McElwee, Max Shallard and Riley Hobbs visited the frozen South in Naseby for the Curling Nationals over the school holidays – the first time a MAGS team has ever competed. TIC Ms Hobbs said, "It was a competition unsurprisingly dominated by the South Island teams (as playing every week on world class ice is very different to the Avondale ice rink!) but MAGS held its own, finishing 8th in the Open competition (we were the only North Island team to beat two South Island teams), 3rd in the boys grade and an impressive 3rd in the draw shot challenge, where Max got the shortest distance of any player. "A shout out, too, to Albertian Tahlia Petersen – now coach at Bayfield – one of whose teams just missed out on the bronze medal by one stone." Felix and Samuel, and Maiah Radu from our Mixed team, have been invited to join the Youth Development programme.
