Second Halves. Second Chances. |
Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Mount Albert Grammar School.
This week marks the second half of our second term, and we each understand that second halves are a test of stamina and perseverance. That this coincides with the start of the winter months reinforces the reality of the challenge. Facing shorter days and harsher weather, it is timely that our MAGS theme for the week has been ‘grit’, namely the capacity to persevere; the ability to show resilience. Our Year 11 students, completed their MCEA examination week yesterday and have had their resilience tested both literally and figuratively. Many will have persevered with their preparation and be pleased with the results to come; some will feel the frustration of realising mistakes made; others may face results that are perhaps reflective of a lack of sustained commitment. There will be a variety of lessons learned and this is, of course, the purpose of this examination round. It is the individual responses to these lessons that will be the final test and the true measure of stamina and perseverance. The rest of us, staff and students alike, also face the challenges of this shared second half. Assignments are to be completed; marking is to be done; positivity must be maintained; trainings and rehearsals are to be attended – some in the cold and the dark. Often though, it is knowing our peers are also facing the same discomforts that makes the digging deeper and the persevering just that little bit easier. Fortunately, it is also said that second halves provide a second chance, and that a second wind can provide the impetus needed for renewed focus and energy. So, here’s to that. Tomorrow, as we end the week, our students are back on the fields and courts and I wish, for all our MAGS teams, strong performances on both sides of the half-time whistle. Per angusta, ad augusta. Enjoy your weekends everyone.

Students Master Intense Drama |
Photos / Miss Hughes and Aslesha Kheterpal Last night and tonight, MAGS Drama had another sold-out season for a production – this time with Level 3 Drama undertaking the mammoth story of 12 Angry Men. HOD Drama Miss Hughes said, "Nineteen students, including 11 Year 12 Accelerates, performed to an extraordinarily high standard given the complexity of the script. "They worked tirelessly over the past two months to learn their lines. This play had over 900 cues (the times at which people speak), which meant all 12 students on stage needed to know almost all the cues each as they were all on stage at the same time having a 12-way conversation. "They supported and encouraged each other enormously throughout this whole process and the outcome was fantastic." You can see more photos from the production here

The MAGS Chess team took 10 players to the Chess-power Cluster tournament held at Mount Roskill Grammar School. The MAGS team was placed first with four players in the top ten. Bui Nguyen placed second, Janice Shi placed third, Victor Coen placed fifth and Felix McElwee placed seventh. The score from the top four players from each team contributed to the team score. Janice Shi was also the top girl at the tournament. Bui Nguyen, Janice Shi and Victor Coen also qualified for the National Championship trophy event to be held at the end of the year.
