May Newsletter

Welcome from the Rector

A warm welcome to this edition of our newsletter. The days are drawing in and the fires are lit. This can mean only one thing - winter sports!

Southland Boys’ High School is hugely grateful for the support that our young men receive on the cold and windswept side-lines throughout the season. Many teams are run thanks to the parent and whanau support as coaches and managers, and all of them benefit from the supportive voices that carry them to make up the extra yards and clinch the victory. We can once again be proud of the way our teams and supporters conduct themselves in competitive environments.

Our Year 13 group are in the midst of a busy time, with the very successful ball behind them and an upcoming school production to fit into their busy assessment schedule. The Prefect group have been fantastic and have found time to include competitions within the assemblies this term. And the house shield has once again changed hands!

Community events are an important part of a school’s role. We have recently been pleased to host #eyesupnz as part of their national tour with Nathan Wallace and Greg Murphy, presenting to an audience regarding safety and awareness for young drivers. A very important subject for the school, the city and New Zealand families. We thank the organisers for coming to Invercargill and hope the positive messages continue to flow to our young men. Driving in and around the school is an area we are concentrating on - especially during the winter months.

Please enjoy the articles that follow, as we celebrate the amazing and varied achievements of the young men from Southland Boys’ High School.

Year 7 Borland Camps

Brenan Reeves (Room 732)
Tension building in the wire as I pull it back, I feel it ripping my fingers open… only the sweet release of the arrow could sooth my pain and the sound of the satisfying swoosh as it zoomed high, and a thump sounded as it pierced the ground with a sharp edge. That was archery.

Tukaea Nikora (Room 732)

My heart was palpitating, it felt like it was trying to escape my chest by beating like a machine gun. As my body iced up like a popsicle in a cold plunge. I saw furry devilish eyes glimmer as the paparazzi torch hit the creature’s eyes, following the light around. I was shell shocked, I sprinted inside with my heart pacing in shock. That was playing spotlight and seeing a possum.

Pie Time! PTA Fundraiser

It's PTA fundraising time! They are selling frozen pies and savouries, this year raising funds towards lighting the school's all-weather outdoor turf. This fundraiser was a HUGE success last year, and we'd like to make this year even more so.

Join in by signing up to a fundraising page and sharing it far and wide. The PTA will do the rest. So far the PTA have sold over $19,000 worth of pies and savouries!

Driving and The Teenage Brain

On Tuesday 9 May, we hosted Nathan Wallis and Greg Murphy on their NZ roadshow - Driving and the Teenage Brain. This was a very informative evening with 300 attendees.

Nathan and Greg spoke about road safety, with the aim of helping parents and young drivers understand the developing teenage brain and improve teenagers’ decision-making when behind the wheel.

World Challenge - Borneo

We’re excited to offer students a life-changing opportunity to explore Borneo in September next year! This two-week Expedition will focus on life skills, confidence, resilience and independence.

We’re partnering with World Challenge to offer this trip. It’s an opportunity for students to get involved in a community project, learn jungle skills on a rainforest trek and see Orangutans in their natural habitat.
