14 March 2025 Newsletter

Kia Ora Tatou

This week in the whole school assembly we celebrated students who had achieved NCEA certificates with merit or endorsement. We have so many students that have achieved these levels of success that we will be doing our second round of awards next week. Once we have presented all of the awards we will publish a full list of recipients in a future newsletter.

I did comment that students who have achieved their NCEA qualification with either a merit or excellence endorsement have demonstrated the school values of Excellence and Perseverance. They have worked towards personal excellence and have no doubt overcome challenges along the way. These challenges may be competing priorities such as sport or cultural participation or field trips out of school etc. These students have demonstrated determination and perseverance to achieve to a high standard.

Stewart Island trip
Last weekend a large group of students travelled to Stewart Island as part of the studies. I have heard very good reports about the trip and a more detailed report will be in this newsletter. I am appreciative of the staff who took the students away especially as some had just returned for the Year 10 camp the previous week.

Conferences
Thank you to all of the whanau who attended the first conference meetings of 2025. I am pleased to see that we had about 76% participation which is a return to pre-pandemic levels. For whanau who were unable to attend over the time set aside please do contact your child’s mentor to arrange an alternative time and or a telephone conference. These meetings are important as they are an opportunity to set goals for the year.

Board of Trustee vacancy
Earlier this term a Parent Board Member stepped down and this has created a vacancy on the Board of Trustees. There is now a process to be followed to fill this vacancy which initially requires the publication of the notice below. If 10% of eligible voters request, an election will be held then this will take place after the 28 day notice period.

Anyone interested in being a parent representative should contact the Presiding Member of the Board at the email address in the notice below. If no election is called then the Board will select a replacement parent representative.

South Otago High School Board

Casual vacancy for a parent representative

A casual vacancy has occurred on the school board for an elected parent representative.

The board has decided to fill the vacancy by selection.

If 10% or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the board, within 28 days of this notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be held.

Request for a by-election should be sent to:

Bronwyn Campbell, Presiding Member, South Otago High School Board of Trustees [email protected]

OR

In writing and delivered to the South Otago High School office by: 3pm, Friday 4 April

SNOB Preparations
Letters have gone home to students who either have an attendance rate below 80% or very close to the cut off. Other letters have gone to whanau where students have outstanding debts which have accumulated. The school sets a requirement that debts should be cleared and attendance rates should be 80% or better.

Finally
With conferences completed this week now is the time for all students to reflect upon how they are progressing towards their goals. I encourage whanau to spend some time talking to their child about how they will achieve and to set some goals which are realistic to be achieved during the course of the year.

Have a good weekend
