This has been a very busy week with visiting speakers and events. On Monday the police visited to speak to all Year 9 and 10 students about the risks and consequences of physical violence. This was followed by a question and answer session for students and the police. I know from talking to students that the presentation was very well received and we appreciate the support of the local police in providing this opportunity

Loves me not
This is now an annual event for all of our Year 12 students and is supported by the Sophie Elliott Foundation is conjunction with the police. The one day workshops cover all range of information about healthy relationships and consent. Again the support of these organisations is essential and it is invaluable learning for our students.

Detector Dogs
This week, on Wednesday, we also had a scan of the school with the NZ Detector Dogs Service looking for drugs. I am pleased to report to the community that despite a thorough search of the school no drugs were found on the school site. The Board of Trustees support the use of detector dogs to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff. The school continues to reserve the right to bring the dogs in at any time during the school year as part of our commitment to keeping South Otago High School a safe work environment for everyone.

Attendance
Now many of the winter sports codes are underway it has been good to see attendance for some students improve significantly and so enabling them to participate and represent the school. As a school we appreciate the help and support of whanau in promoting positive attendance and so providing the opportunity for all students to represent the school in both sporting and cultural activities.

On going industrial action
Sadly, the secondary teachers industrial action is continuing and next week the Year 11 students will be rostered home on Thursday, 25 May. A letter will be sent home at within three days of the date to be rostered home, once the PPTA have confirmed the action.

Finally
The end of next week will mark the mid point of the second term and a useful time for all students to reflect upon their progress towards their own individual goals both for the term and the year.
