1 September 2023 Newsletter

Kia Ora Tatou

To start this week I would like to acknowledge the sad passing of Mark Bennett, a member of our parent community. We extend our sympathies to Mark’s family at this very sad time and offer our support to both students and adults who may have been impacted by this tragedy.

Tournament Week
This week the school has bee somewhat quieter with a large number of students away participating in a variety of sports for Tournament Week. Students are spread out around the south island representing the school in hockey, netball, rugby and soccer. Next week I anticipate we will have full reports from the teams for their competitions.

I am very grateful to the teachers and parents who have given up their time to take students away and support them with their competition. Students would not get these opportunities without the support or our community both on the field and in preparation for these events. Thank you all who have contributed to support these opportunities.

Ringa Toi Art exhibition
For the second year running we have student art work which has been accepted into the Ringa Toi Art Exhibition. Congratulations to Paige King and Ryan Williams (Second year) on this impressive recognition of their excellent art work which go in display at Te Papa in Wellington later this month.

Senior Options
Senior students should have made their option selections for 2024 courses. Mr Scarth will be collecting the final option sheets next week and this will determine the option pattern and staffing for next year. It is important that students have consulted with their teachers if they are uncertain about courses that they would like to follow. Students are also encouraged to ensure that they have sought advice as to the appropriate courses for specific careers that they would like to pursue in the future.

Senior practice exams
Next week senior practice exams commence on Wednesday and finish the following week. It is important that students treat these exams as seriously as the end of year exams. The results that students earn may be used by NZQA if their exam in November is impaired by illness, medical event or natural disaster. These exams are not an alternative to sitting the end of year exams and students should continue to plan to sit their assessments in November.

Too often we see students not treat these exams seriously and then unable to sit the exam later in the year due to illness or unexpected event and the school has to report the poor test result despite the student not demonstrating their full potential. For students who are unable to complete these practice exams there will be a ‘catch up’ opportunity before the end of the term.

Water fountain access
The school is currently experiencing issues with the water fountains and this means that currently we have only two operating fountains in school. To avoid queues or issues with access, students are recommended to bring a larger water bottle for the day. This will be of particular importance for senior students who are sitting exams in the second half of the week. The school will be working to remedy the issues as soon as possible.

Finally
Spring is nearly upon us and the promise of warmer weather. It has been good to travel to work in daylight and also get home before dark! I hope that you all have the opportunity to make the most of the longer daylight hours and improving weather.
