Kia Ora Tatou I am delighted that students have embraced last weeks message of “work hard, play hard’. The junior student council have been a great example of this. Despite the windy conditions they organised a successful gum boot throw on the field as part of Mike Kings “I Am Hope” message that supports young people with their mental health. Assembly with an inter house tug-of-war was another success with enthusiastic participation by the students. I am reliably told that recently Sommerville have performed so well that potentially the house shield is back in play and within reach. We just have the final points to be counted. Touch Nationals Good luck to our touch team as they head to Rotorua for the secondary schools touch nationals. The tournament runs from Friday to Sunday and our draw is meant to come out this Friday in which we play probably eight games. 16 players will be travelling and thanks to Ben Smart, Emma Puna, Dan and Heidi Marshall, parents and everyone who helped with fundraising. I feel lucky to be part of a community that is so supportive of our school and students. Rural careers Last week, we were lucky enough to have the Rural Health Expo for Year 10 students interested in this field. The expo included speakers from the medicine, pharmacy, and optometry fields, among many others. Students got the chance to do a number of practical activities, such as CPR, eye tests, and attempted to stitch a fake wound. Highlanders training session A big thank you to the Isaac Group who sponsor the Highlanders. They have organised a skills session with 30 of junior rugby players. They took part in a range of drills and games which will help their skills in the future. It finished with big smiles for photos and a signing session where students got merchandise. Junior examinations Well done to all of our junior students that worked diligently in the examinations at the end of the year. This will be excellent practice for future years as examinations become a bigger part of NCEA. I hope students take the time to reflect on what went well and what they can learn in their preparations to improve in the future. And finally…. The Christmas Curse will be upon us next week for our junior end of year production. The full dress rehearsals are done and we look forward to seeing our students shine under the bright lights on Monday and Tuesday evening at 6:30pm in the school Hall.
