Thursday 30th March 2023 | Term 1 Week 9

Kia ora e te whānau,

As we approach the end of the term, we have plenty of exciting news to share with you…

Baby McGifford: The gorgeous Parker arrived earlier this week - congratulations to the McGifford family; we’re looking forward to meeting your little man!

Sports
: Our Aoraki Volleyball team had a great time competing in Timaru last week, and we're proud of all their hard work and effort. Meanwhile, (at the time of writing) our Maadi Rowing squad have done us proud by qualifying for the semi-finals or finals following their impressive performances in the heats. Well done to all our athletes! Have a look at the more detailed article in the newsletter, and catch them on OneNews (either Thursday or Friday evening).

Education Review Office (ERO): We're pleased to report that the ERO visit last week was very successful, and we look forward to receiving the new report, which will be sent to the Board for approval mid-term 2. Following Board approval, we can share this success with the community in finer detail. A big thanks to all our teachers, students, and staff for their hard work and dedication in making TAS the place to be.

Other learning visits and trips: We're having a busy couple of weeks, which included hosting Nicki Tempero from Core, who helped us make significant progress towards our class movies in Years 1-10. Ms Arkless and Monique van der Westhuizen had an exciting time at the Otago University, Year 13 Portobello Biology Camp near Dunedin last week. Next week, we're looking forward to welcoming Jayne Fitzgerald from Massey University's DMIC Maths Strategy, as well as the Otago University Liaison Officer for our senior students.

Roll increase: We're excited to announce that we're experiencing a significant roll increase to start this year, and we welcome all our new students and families to TAS. Please note that this positive change does impact class sizes, which in some cases are significantly larger than in previous years. Unfortunately, we do not yet qualify for additional funding for more teaching staff - watch this space!

Heads up:

  • The student-led Movie Day is on Saturday, so don't forget to pre-purchase your tickets.
  • Home and School AGM, 6.30 pm on Monday, 3rd April, at the Community Centre Lounge.
  • End of Term Assemblies in the Community Centre will commence on Thursday, April 6th, at 1 pm for Year 1-6 students and 2 pm for Year 7-13 students. Families are welcome to collect Y1-6 students from outside the school directly after their assembly; supervision will be provided for those staying until 3.05 pm. The Y7-13 event can sometimes overrun the end of the school day, so be prepared to hang around a little later than 3.05 pm (the buses will not depart without the seniors).
  • Change of date for the Term 2 Teacher Only Day. Due to facilitator availability, the Teacher Only Day at the start of Term 2 will now be held on Friday, April 28th. Please mark this new date on your calendars.

We hope you have a wonderful final week of term!

He waka eke noa,

Kate Staniford
Tumuaki | Principal
