Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Mount Albert Grammar School.
One of the great things about the New Zealand school system is the broad way we define an education.
Complementing what happens inside the classroom is an emphasis on providing students with great experiences outside of the classroom. Providing a high quality co-curricular programme requires much additional resourcing and can be expensive for a school.
At MAGS, thousands of volunteer hours from parents, staff and our wider community ensure students can join teams and groups across our arts, sports and service pillars. The power of the group in creating belonging and connection among our students is well recognised at MAGS. As humans we have a huge desire to belong. For millennia, groups have provided us with safety and security … and survival!
And still today, being part of a group and connecting through a common cause provides us with confidence and identity – this is even more so with young people. We like to think there is a group for everyone at MAGS. Our investment in a wide range of co-curricular programmes creates pride and loyalty to our school. And that sense of belonging transfers into the most important group setting of all ... the classroom.
Thank you to our Board of Trustees and all in our community who support our groups, and make MAGS such a special place to which to belong.
Have a good weekend.
Patrick Drumm

The Centennial Choir certainly made an entrance when they landed in Wellington, singing for travellers at the airport ahead of their appearances at the Big Sing Finale. Performing at the Michael Fowler Centre, the choir, under the direction of Terence Maskell, sang yesterday and this afternoon. Yesterday they performed Let All Men Sing, by Keith Christopher, In Flanders Fields (David Hamilton) and Ubi Caritas (Ola Gjeilo). Today they are singing Gruss (Felix Mendelssohn) and Shenandoah (arranged by James Erb) as part of Session Six, which is scheduled to begin at 3.45pm, and the boys should be on stage around 4.15pm. They will perform again tomorrow as part of the Gala Concert, beginning at 6.30pm. You can watch the livestream from the Big Sing Finale here |
Senior Pre-Requisite Exams |
The Term 3 Senior Pre-Requisite Timetable has been shared with students via the Year 13 and Year 12 Google Classrooms. It has also been shared to the Year 11 classroom with clarification on study leave for Year 11 students. Students in other year groups (including Year 11), who are taking a Level 2 or 3 course for which there is an exam may have study leave for the morning of an afternoon exam. All other classes must be attended. Year 12 and Year 13 students must only attend school to sit an examination or, with permission of a staff member, for practical exams or study purposes. At all other times they must be at home studying. You can see the timetable and exam instructions here |
Our dedicated Health Committee members were out in force today, taking collections and handing out ribbons and flowers for Daffodil Day, which helps to raise money for, and awareness of, the Cancer Society's work. Funds raised mean the Cancer Society can help getting people to treatment via their free driving service, or specialist nursing and psychology support, and accommodation for those needing life-saving treatment far from home. You can donate to the Cancer Society's work here |

The Junior Speech Competition, a prestigious event that sees fierce competition each year, once again delivered an outstanding evening of oration. This year's event featured 13 entries, along with three participants vying for the Fred Free Prize for Junior Reading Aloud. The competition was judged by esteemed academics Dr Esther Fitzpatrick and Dr Claudia Rozas-Gómez, who found choosing one winner very difficult. The first prize in the speech competition was awarded to Natalia Perry for her risky speech on the necessity of risk-taking, commended for both its insightful points and superb delivery. The runner-up, Harry Wilmshurst, entertained with his persuasive and funny piece, 'Why I Would Make an Excellent Mr Powell', which left even Deputy Principal Mr Powell himself convinced. Joint third place went to Fern O’Connor, whose scintillating presentation 'Birds Aren’t Real', had the judges pondering the merits of tinfoil hats, and Milly Malpas, whose kind approach to procrastination resonated with the judges and audience alike. Special mention was also given by both judges to Katie Watkinson for her powerful speech 'I Am Unapologetically Māori' and Nicholas Cowie’s on 'The “Justice” System'. The Fred Free Prize for Junior Reading Aloud was awarded to Kawiti Albert Campbell for his dynamic and dramatic reading of an extract from Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses, which thoroughly impressed the judges. Overall, the evening was filled with good humour and an outstanding display of talent from our Year 10 students, making it a memorable event for all involved. Special thanks to Jess Papesch and Danielle Cole, Heads of the English Committee, for organising such an enjoyable event.

On Wednesday August 21, 16 junior MAGS students participated in the annual Auckland Mathex competition at Barfoot and Thompson Stadium, Kohimarama. TIC Mr Walden said, "Our MAGS teams participated with spirit and determination and enjoyed the opportunity to problem-solve against other schools. "The 2024 questions proved tricky with only one of the 100 Year 10 teams scoring the maximum of 100 points within 30 minutes. "Our top Year 10 team scored 75, narrowly missing out on a Top 10 finish. In the Year 9 division, our top team scored 85 points – an admirable achievement!"

Creating Good Study Habits |
This time of the year often means that students are completing their final internal assessments whilst looking towards preparation for external exams. Encouraging students to manage their time well, helping them to stay physically and mentally well and supporting them in creating healthy study habits will be vital over the next few months. Here you can access a special report and video from Dr Emma Woodward via SchoolTV, our free resource for parents. It provides some excellent information and evidence on the importance of sleep, nutrition, exercise, hydration and positive interactions with others. Dr Woodward also gives her top five healthy study tips. "Research suggests that one in six students experience heightened academic stress due to high workloads. Therefore we must first ensure the building blocks of wellbeing, as nothing is more important than their physical and mental health." – Dr Emma Woodward
