E Pluribus Unum – Unity in Diversity |
Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Mount Albert Grammar School.
Today’s Pink Shirt Day has provided an opportunity for students to reflect on the people in our MAGS community and the importance of creating connection and belonging for everyone in our school. Commitment to creating an inclusive environment is not new for MAGS.
Over 50 years ago, during the Golden Jubilee of the school in 1972, the F.W. Gamble Hall saw the installation of an impressive work of art – E Pluribus Unum – in the middle of the honours board behind the stage. This heavy sculpture was created by renowned artist Arnold Manaaki Wilson (MNZM QSM), who was Head of Art at MAGS at the time.
Each individual piece of the sculpture is different, yet the whole forms a circle – a metaphor for the school – unity in diversity!
The 1970s was a time of rapid change in the cultural demographics of the MAGS community, with the sculpture a reflection of those times. And in the decades that have followed, the assembled student body has continued to grow in diversity.
Through those years, Arnold Wilson’s sculpture has looked over that evolving student community. E Pluribus Unum – a powerful reminder of inclusion – and the part each of us plays in the story of MAGS. Have a good weekend,
Patrick Drumm Headmaster

Promoting Inclusivity on Pink Shirt Day |
Our Health Committee members took collections and held bake sales at interval and lunchtime today to raise funds for Pink Shirt Day. Students were encouraged to wear pink clothing in place of their usual MAGS blouse or shirt. Many MAGS staff also wore pink for the day. Pink Shirt Day is about creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion or cultural background. Pink Shirt Day is funded by donations that help the Mental Health Foundation to reduce bullying through raising awareness about bullying prevention, funding education workshops and supplying thousands of free resources that promote inclusive workplaces, schools and communities.

The Athlete's Foot has generously donated $760 to MAGS, generated from sales when buyers mention MAGS during their purchase. Joshua Bull, Assistant Manager of The Athlete's Foot St Lukes, said, "Our school rewards is for anyone that buys a shoe at any Athlete's Foot store and mentions the school before purchasing – then we will donate $10 back to the school. Can Drive Collection Next Week |
Interact is finishing off its Can Drive next week, run alongside Westhaven Rotary in support of Auckland City Mission. One in five New Zealanders experience food insecurity and are unsure of where their next meal will come from. Cold and harsh winters can be extremely difficult for thousands of these individuals and families who cannot afford food during these times. Interact wants to support these people and is encouraging students to bring in canned goods to donate to this cause. Interact members will be coming around during AMP next week to collect non-perishable items such as baked beans, sweet corn, and canned fruit. For Juniors, there will also be interform points up for grabs for the number of cans collected in each class. Your support could be life-changing —just one can could bring warmth and hope to someone in need this winter. |

Curlers out of the Blocks |
According to our curlers, the real “winter” sport is up and running with the first round of the curling season at Paradice Ice Rink last night. MAGS has two teams competing this year: 'For Your Ice Only' – Maiah Radu, Stephanie Zhang, Ma’a Pau’u and Ha Nhi Huynh – and 'On Her Majesty’s Sweeping Service' – Riley Hobbs, Sean Cavanagh, Kaelin Olesen, Soren Bell and Zander Curnow. TIC Ms Hobbs said, "With only Maiah, Riley and Sean returning from last season, we welcome a number of novice players, however you would not guess it from their performances. "For Your Ice Only played out a tense 3-3 draw with a team from EGGS, and On Her Majesty’s Sweeping Service scored an impressive 8-2 victory over an experienced Massey side. The season continues across terms 2 and 3 with the North Island Championships to come in tournament week as well." |
Mountain Biking Series Continues |
The second race of the Auckland Secondary Schools Mountain Bike series took place at Waitawa Regional Park last weekend. Four students competed in their respective age group categories. Hunter Marsh (Year 11) continued his strong form, finishing second in the Under 17 Boys category. He managed to edge out the third-placed rider by four seconds, completing the 16.8km course in a time of 55:44. This puts him second-equal for the overall series with three more races to come. Other results were Alfie Ferguson (Year 10) and Max Morgan (Year 9) finishing 13th and 14th respectively in the Under 15 Boys section. Lewis Darby-Smith also competed but a broken chain forced him out of the race. Assistant Director of Sport Mr Crossan said, "Thanks to David Ferguson, who managed the students on the day." |
