March Newsletter

From the Rector

It is incredible to think that a term is nearly behind us already in 2024. Having said that, as you look through this newsletter, or visit the school during the day, you can see just how much is being done and achieved by all.

Physically the school is undergoing refits and refurbishments that will benefit us all in time, and we apologise for any inconveniences whilst this essential work continues to occur.

The staff and students have continued to push the boundaries of achievement in all aspects of school life - both inside and outside the classroom. We continue to be exceptionally proud of their involvement in events throughout the community, and are very grateful for the continued support of whānau and old boys in so many areas.

We also have some significant events ahead, with fund raising well under way for the upcoming trip to Japan for our 1st XV, our Academic capping assembly just around the corner, and with the Southland Boys' High School ANZAC Assembly, a very special occasion, in the last week of term.

So with March just about behind us, I wish you all a happy and restful Easter break, and holiday in just a few short weeks.

I will be on sabbatical leave for Term 2, due to return in June. During this time Mr Laurenson and the very capable team will be continuing the great work that has started this year.

Fish on Drains Project

Recently Room 19G had the privilege of working on the Fresh Water Drains - Fish on Drains project.

With the help of Ken Bowie (Patron) and Jim Watson from the Old Boys' Association, the Invercargill Sunrise Rotary Club, and Invercargill City Council, the boys drilled blue plastic fish onto stormwater drains as an awareness project to protect waterways.

This is to make students aware that what goes down stormwater drains can impact the quality of streams, as the drains are freshwater.

Homestay families - Expression of Interest

This information varies from a Facebook post we put out recently. We are now looking for weekend and school holiday host families only.

We are looking for kind and caring homestay families to host international students on the weekends and during school holidays. We have one student who is in need of a weekend homestay immediately.

If you would like to offer a home to our current student, or you are interested in becoming a homestay family for 2025, please register your interest below.

Host families are paid, and will be well supported by the school throughout the homestay. The student will become part of your family, and need your support with all aspects of life - including study, sports and social activities.

Host families are not required to have a family member enrolled at Southland Boys' High School. We welcome anyone who can offer a warm and safe living environment. Police vetting is required (completed by and paid for by the school) for all family members over the age of 18 living in the home.

Community Service

Our students have been demonstrating the value of service to the community, with two recent fundraisers for charity.

A group of Year 11 boys spent Friday 8 March collecting for the Child Cancer Foundation outside Windsor New World. They worked in a rotation all day and raised over $800 for the charity, which is an incredible achievement.

On 22 February, our prefects also spent the day outside Windsor New World, fundraising for Plunket - bears and all!

Mahika Kai - Food Gathering

On Friday 16th February, the Level 1 Art class went to Ōreti Beach to learn about the protocol (tikanga) relevant to mahika kai, or food gathering.

The art students were hosted by Cyril Gilroy and Meg Adamson from Murihiku Marae. Cyril shared his valuable knowledge about the process of harvesting toheroa, and students’ gained the experience of this Murihiku tradition and a welcome taste of toheroa patties.

The experience is part of their first achievement standard in NCEA Art where they are required to learn about an aspect of Te Ao Maori and record through photography and drawing as evidence for their artwork. Examples of their artwork will be posted as the term progresses.
