Term 4 - Week 8

Tēnā koutou,

There will be some tired students and staff after our Year 10 camps and Year 9 activities this week.  If you follow us on Facebook, you will have seen some of the awesome activities our students have been up to this week.  Thanks again, to all the staff who have been involved in creating these experiences for our students.

We have three formal occasions next week as we round off the 2024 academic year.  On Tuesday afternoon we celebrate with our junior Effort and Industry prize giving - Year 9 1:45pm to 2:20pm and Year 10 2:30pm to 3:10pm - I love these awards.  One of our school values is Wero - to show courage and bravery.  These awards are for students who have consistently given their best this year - I love that!  On Tuesday evening we have our Year 13 Leavers’ Ceremony.  It is an opportunity to farewell our Year 13 students of 2024 and hear about their plans for life after school - it’s a great event!  We finish our formal occasions for the year with our Junior Prizegiving at 10am on Thursday morning - again, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate junior students’ successes this year. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend these occasions.

Our junior students’ reports will be posted out on Wednesday next week to give you an indication of progress made in 2024.

Have a great weekend.

Ngā mihi

Ben Claxton

                                               Street Smart

Learning to drive is a fun but risky business.

Road crashes are one of the leading causes of death and serious injury for young people with youth vehicle accident fatalities in New Zealand amongst the highest in the OECD.
Street Smart driven by Tony Quinn Foundation Road Safety is a world-class, best practice, cognitive, insight (learn by doing) based driver programme that aims to positively influence the lives of young kiwis across the country.
Street Smart is not your traditional defensive driving, classroom lesson or demonstration only based environment. It’s a one-day event, offering a practical hands-on learning experience and providing young drivers and their parents/caregivers the opportunity to undertake supervised driving practice. This provides the parent the opportunity to also assess themselves, in order to be a better coach and mentor to their teen.
Street Smart is not a test, it’s not about right and wrong or pass or fail. It is a fun learning day with a focus on developing good decision-making strategies for safe driving, including self-assessment and learning, reading the road environment, resisting peer pressure, managing or eliminating distractions, and planning ahead.
Behind the wheel for the majority of the day, participants experience situations they may not have faced in their driving journey so far but could be a real-world situation at some stage during their driving life.
Street Smart takes place in safe, controlled, off-the-road environments - including Taupō International Motorsport Park - under the watchful eye of trained coaches, who will help teach participants their many years of learnings as professional drivers. While our venues are racetrack venues, there is no racing involved and everything is conducted under normal road rules and conditions.
Our aim is to give young drivers a better understanding of where they are in their driving journey, so they can leave Street Smart driven by Tony Quinn Foundation Road Safety as a safer and more aware driver but most importantly be learner centred (taking charge of their learning and discovering where they may need further assistance through the help of their parent/caregiver as a mentor or via driving lessons from a qualified driving instructor.

                                                   Summer River Safety Campaign
We’re into the summertime swim-time fun, for us and whānau visiting from out of town.
A reminder that the Aratiatia Rapids is a great place to take visitors, but it is an extremely dangerous place to swim, and sadly death and injuries have occurred here in the past.
Huge volumes of water can be released from the dam into the rapids at any time. Water levels and flows can change quickly.
Follow the rules and read the signs – please do not swim below the Aratiatia Dam, stay out of the rapids and downstream areas.
There are safe viewing points where you and your visitors can watch the Aratiatia Dam gates open.
Keep your friends and whānau safe this summer.
