It has been great to welcome our Year 12 & 13 students back into the College this week. They’re in the process of confirming their courses to make this year a great platform for 2022 and beyond. We know that Term One this year will be disrupted, but getting the right course confirmed now means we can all focus on the Terms ahead and take the opportunity to be the best we can be.
On Tuesday, our Year 9 new students will be welcomed with a student powhiri on the field after saying goodbye to their whanau at home or the school gate. The reason for this is that under the Red traffic light setting, it’s about making sure our College minimises risk.
Wednesday is our first full timetable day for our students. We’re really looking forward to getting stuck in and making some good progress.
We have addressed the challenges that came our way over the last two years as a country. Our community has responded well in the past, now is the time to respond again with confidence and experience.
As discussed before, our Habits of Mind strategies, such as manawanui (persisting), flexibility, and being open to continuous learning, will help all of us over this next Term.
I want to congratulate Mr Lee Devenish, Deputy Principal, who has been promoted to Director of Pre-Programme with Teach First New Zealand (TFNZ). This is an excellent opportunity for him to use his leadership skills to recruit and train aspirational leaders to become teachers. Lee leaves a significant gap in our College and hearts, and we wish him well in this new endeavour. He has strong links to the College, and I know his relationship with us will strengthen as we work to ensure we get the best teachers in our College.
Thanks again, Lee, for your awesome contribution to Waitakere College over your nine years here.
Let’s all keep looking for those positive opportunities this year.
Nga Mihi,
Mark P Shanahan Principal
It’s been a long break, but students are finally back where they belong. We welcomed our first students into school on Wednesday, 2nd of February.
Waitakere College is proud to present our prefects for this year. These students have been selected for their leadership skills, integrity, reliability, and excellence. We look forward to seeing them in action this year.
There have been significant developments around the school, with four new classrooms and ongoing upgrades to the school hall.
Please get in touch with our Director of Sport, Mr Liam Mulrooney, if you are interested in coaching a school sports team. Be sure to indicate what sport/team/year level you are interested in coaching.
See what's coming up over the next few weeks in the life of Waitakere College.
There is an opportunity for a few more students to participate in this 5-week Global Competency Certificate course in March, but places will fill quickly, so please email Mrs Kemp now (if you would like to be considered) at [email protected]
Would you like to meet students overseas and brainstorm ideas for solving challenges that impact us all?
