From the RectorKia ora koutou,
As we move deeper into Term 2, it’s been fantastic to see the energy and enthusiasm across all year levels at Southland Boys’ High School.
Our Year 7 students are currently enjoying their camps at Borland Lodge. These camps are a cornerstone of our junior programme, offering students the chance to build resilience, teamwork, and a deeper connection with the outdoors. A huge thank you to the staff and parent helpers who make these experiences possible.
Last week our students sat the Co-Requisite Literacy and Numeracy exams. These assessments are an important milestone, and it was great to see the way the boys approached them with focus and confidence. Remember, preparation and a positive mindset go a long way.
The Senior Production of Legally Blonde, which ran from the 26th to the 29th of May, was a vibrant and entertaining showcase of talent. With every performance completely sold out, it was clear the show was a resounding success. Congratulations to the cast, crew, and staff-your hard work and creativity truly shone on stage. A heartfelt thank you to everyone in the school community who came along to support the production.
The winter sports season is now underway, and it’s great to see so many of our young men representing SBHS across a wide range of codes. Good luck to all our teams-play hard, play fair, and remember that enjoyment is a key ingredient of success. Make sure you’re having fun out there. We also look forward to seeing many parents supporting our students at the upcoming annual interschool fixture against Otago Boys’ High School, taking place on the 11th of June.
As a school we are actively pursuing closer connections with Boys Schools across New Zealand. It is through these connections that we aim to ensure our practise aligns with the science of learning. To this end we hosted representatives from the Senior Management team at Wellington College who spent two days working with members of our staff on ways to further engage with and extend our boys. We would like to thank Wellington College and their Headmaster Glen Denim for their generosity in giving up their time to share their mahi with us.
Ngā mihi nui,
Ray Laurenson Rector
