Manawatia a Matariki

Matariki is our celebration of the Māori New Year when the constellation of Matariki is present in our dawn sky. In New Zealand, Aotearoa, the Matariki cluster of stars holds significant cultural meaning. Each star in the constellation is believed to represent different aspects of life, such as remembrance of those who have passed, gratitude for the harvests, and aspirations for the year to come. The arrival of Matariki encourages communities to come together in celebration.

Matariki is visible to the naked eye from most parts of our planet and is known by many different names. Astronomers refer to it as the Pleiades, a term derived from Greek. In Japan, it is called Subaru, which means ‘to come together’. In China it is Mao, the hairy head of the white tiger, and in India it is known as Krittika.
In Greek mythology the cluster is known as the seven sisters.

  • Take the time this weekend to remember those that we have lost in our family, whānau and community since the last rising of Martariki - Matariki Ahunga Nui.
  • Take time to gather with friends and family to celebrate the good things we have - Matariki Ahunga Nui.
  • Finally, take the opportunity to revisit and make plans for the promise of a new year - Matariki Manako Nui.

Have a great Matariki weekend and look forward to our final week of term.

Ngā mihi
