Thursday 31st August 2023 | Term 3 Week 7 |
Kia ora e te whānau,
We hope this week's newsletter finds you in good spirits. It's great to see the days getting longer and that we are starting to experience some lovely Spring-like weather.
SISS Netball Tournament We have been watching the success of our SISS Netball team, 'Team Twiau' (with students from Twizel, Waiau, and The Catlins Area Schools), in Invercargill this week. So far, we have had wins in all games - against Kaikorai Valley, East Otago, Catholic Cathedral College and Mountain View. On Wednesday we won both of playoff games, against Lawrence Area School and Mackenzie College. At the time of writing this, they are in the top four of their grade. Go Team Twiau! Thanks to Chelsea for all the work she has put into preparing the team and then travelling with them to Invercargill. She has been supported by Jazz Quinn, from Waiau Area School.
North Otago Cross Country Congratulations too, to the 13 students from Years 4-8 who represented Twizel Area School at the North Otago Cross Country in Oamaru on Monday. Thanks to Karatī Metcalfe and the whānau helpers who helped make that event a success.
Junior School Ski Trips We have been fortunate that the weather has been fabulous for the beginning of the Junior School Ski Trips this week. This is a great opportunity for our ākonga to experience skiing for the first time, or to extend on the skills they already have. This is another of those things that make Twizel Area School such a special place! Hopefully the wonderful weather continues for the remaining trips next week.
Employment Updates We are pleased to announce that Olivia Wise (currently teaching in Room 13) has been appointed to a permanent position in our Junior Syndicate from 2024. We are so glad that she will remain as part of our whānau, and that we will be able to continue to see the amazing work she will do with our rangatahi. We are also pleased to announce that we have employed Melissa Neill in a permanent role in our Junior School, beginning in term one 2024. She will be moving to us from Geraldine High School, where she currently teaches in Year 8. We are sure that the entire community will make her feel welcome and help her settle into our TAS whānau.
Key upcoming events: → Derived Grade Exams are coming up in week nine. These are important exams that will show our NCEA students how they are progressing and the areas they need to work on before the external examinations in term four. The results from these exams are also used if a student is sick, or there is a bereavement or other significant event that means they are unable to attend the examinations next term. We encourage you to support our school discussions around study and ensuring students are as prepared as possible for these exams. It is also a good time to start having discussions around study timetables, so students are able to start preparing for their end-of-year external examinations. Students will receive their timetable for the derived grade exams soon.
→ Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is also coming up in week nine. Karatī Metcalfe and Sandy Nelson have been working to create a number of both school and community-based events and activities. Keep your eyes peeled for more info!
Finally, as we move into the warmer weather, please remind your children to bring their water bottles to school and that they may need to remove jerseys as the weather warms during the day. It is great to see students students prepared for the cold weather, but some of them are struggling with the heat later in the day. It is also a good time to check that all uniform items are clearly named. If they are, it makes it easier for us to get the uniform items back to students when they get lost.
Noho ora mai, Charlotte Saunders Acting Principal
