We are coming to the culmination of our winter sports team competitions over the next two weeks. Winter is our main season where all levels are involved in sport across Auckland and, also, now in our own intra school basketball competition starting next week. Sport is a very uniting feature that strengthens our college culture and belonging here at Waitākere. At last count, we have 48 winter sports teams that I am aware of. This is roughly 600 students, 70 coaches/teachers, 500 + family and whānau dedicated to their rangitahi being better than before (BTB)
Sport is so great for young people because it develops and strengthens;
- Manawanui - never give up, never give up
- Positive growth mindset - hard work and practice will make me better. Not talent alone.
- Personal discipline - managing joy, anger, pain
- Teamwork - working with others on shared goals
- Social cohesion - you get awareness of other schools, students and cultures across our city.
- Pride and confidence to be yourself
These are but a few of the positive aspects of sport and why we value it in this college. Congratulations to you all on participating this year and thank you to our coaches and managers, teachers, staff, students and parents and all our whānau supporting our rangatahi. We have 11 teams in respective semi-finals and final playoffs from basketball, football and netball of the 29 teams currently competing, we wish you luck on your journey.
Thank you for being involved in sport this winter season and long may it continue.
