Onehunga High School News

Tēnā koutou, ki te whānau o Onehunga High School

Last year the Music Department set its sights on participating for the first time in the prestigious Big Sing choral festival. They achieved this with an outstanding performance at the Town Hall, which drew praise from the judges. Drama students similarly are working extremely hard to ensure the success of the school production of ‘Little Women’.  This will be a night for all the family to enjoy. Once again, OHS hosted the Top New Zealand Art Folio Exhibition. Thirty Level 3 Scholarship art folios were on display for the school to enjoy and for our students to be inspired by. Research tells us that the Arts increases empathy, tolerance and develops an understanding of who we are and how we can positively contribute to society. It is so pleasing to see the Arts thriving at OHS.

The senior students’ in the Food and Hospitality Department made us extremely proud by producing and serving a quality meal for over 100 whānau last week and a truly delicious meal for the Maungakiekie Rotarians this week. Both these occasions were used for NCEA assessments.

There are many notable highlights across the past fortnight:

  • The Junior Debating team have been working very hard to up-skill and have had some pleasing wins. They have impressed us with their enthusiasm and oratory skills.
  • Four junior boys competed with over 500 athletes in the Auckland Secondary Schools Orienteering Competition this week, with outstanding results.
  • It was a privilege for me to accompany the Year 11 and 12 History students to a lecture given by the legendary Minnijean Brown Trickey last week. History was brought alive for students.
  • The after school study space grows in popularity each week. We have large numbers of students attending, taking advantage of the support provided for upcoming assessments by many dedicated staff.
  • In the sports arena, we have had many exciting wins. It is hard to go past the Senior Girls’ Rugby 10’s 84-0 win against Aorere! The Year 9 Netball team showed great fortitude to win 11-10 in the final minutes of play against Botany Downs College.

As we head into the winter months, please be mindful of the winter uniform. Students are expected to wear the correct uniform items to and from school, including the OHS jumper and school jacket. Thank you for supporting our high standards.

As I have communicated before, there is a direct correlation between regular attendance and achieving NCEA credits. Students that attend 85% or more, are on average twice as likely to achieve and six times more likely to get excellence. With only two weeks of term left, I encourage all students to go the extra mile to ensure that they can continue to feel proud of their efforts.

We are looking forward to celebrating Matariki next week. The rising of Matariki is significant as it reminds us to pause, reflect and plan for the future. Ka mahuta a Matariki i te pae, ka mahuta ō tātou tūmanako ki te tau. When Matariki rises above the horizon, our aspirations rise to the year ahead.

Enjoy the weekend.

Careers

This past fortnight, our students have enthusiastically engaged with guest speakers invited in around their interests.  Students researching careers in the creative industries met with staff from Massey’s College of Creative Arts, while others attended an inspiring seminar on academic life at Otago University.

Students considering the Superyacht industry and Hospitality Management gained knowledge about these dynamic sectors through a meeting with Queenstown Resort College.

Three lawyers from Meredith Connell law firm shared their career journeys and insights into the legal profession. Another group of students met with Police officers who shed light on the realities and rewards of serving the community, as well as the career pathways within the NZ Police.
