Kia ora koutou,
I acknowledge the feedback that you are providing me regarding your ongoing concerns at the ongoing consequences of the current PPTA Industrial Action.
You can be assured that the Orewa College Board shares these same concerns. We are looking at what can be done in this situation, to fully support our students while this current scenario exists.
I am pleased to advise that senior staff will provide 3 specific 'Academic Catch-up' opportunities for students in the Library in the following 3 weeks detailed as follows:
Wednesday 21 June 1.45-3.45pm Wednesday 28 June 12.30-4.30pm Monday 10 July 9am-4pm.
These opportunities are in addition to the Wednesday afternoon 'Learning Hubs' for senior school students and the academic peer mentoring programme which occurs on Tuesday after school in the Library. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend these academic catch-up opportunities.
Students in Year 12,13 enjoyed a very impressive 'Ball' at the Ellerslie Events Centre on Saturday night. Students were relaxed, engaging and behaved very well as mature young people. This event definitely continues to be a highlight of the extracurricular life of the college.
Your ongoing support is really appreciated over the last 2 weeks of what has been a very challenging school term, for yourselves, students and staff.
Ngā mihi
Greg Pierce

Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competitions Orewa College is proud to announce that Year 10 student Maria Walker-Kinnell (Ngāti Porou) successfully gained second place in the overall Junior Section of Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competitions held last Friday at Orakei Marae.
In its 58th year, Ngā Manu Kōrero is ‘....the most significant event on the Māori education calendar for nurturing the oratory skills and providing the stage for young people to express their views and to lay down their challenges to an admiring and critical audience of peers, parents, whānau and judges’ (Ngā Manu Kōrero 2023 Handbook, p3). Maria’s speech was entitled ‘Māori Connection to History and Whakapapa’, a powerful and personal journey of discovery of Te Ao Māori and her Māori heritage. Her delivery was confident and well-rehearsed and began with opening lines that would shock any audience into paying attention! I will say no more ... Maria also gained recognition as best speaker in one of the regional junior sections, an accolade also of high repute. Although she just missed out on representing Tāmaki Makaurau at national level, we are very proud of Maria and her achievements in this prestigious Māori event. Ka mau te wehi, Maria!
The Kapa Haka group followed her performance with a waiata and haka, this was performed with absolute passion and the audience applauded our students for their fine effort. VIDEO

Year 10 Japanese Trip Year 10 semester course students went to Yawara Ramen bar last Tuesday. The students practised how to say some phrases in Japanese as they communicated with the Japanese staff. They enjoyed dishes such as ramen (noodles with soup) or karaage (deep fried chicken) on rice. All of them say "Oishii" (yummy). Survivor Orewa Survivor Orewa season 15 has just wrapped up in level 3 Outdoor Education. After 10 curling weeks of challenges, tribal councils, idol hunting, alliances, backstabbing and everything else that makes up this wonderful game, we finally have a winner from each class. | | A huge congratulations to our winners from each class, Hannah Gray from Mr Dickinson's Class and J’me Denney from Mrs Goodricks class. | | |
|
This unit has been going for over 15 years at Orewa College and with each year it gets bigger and better. New challenges, new twists but the core of the game stays the same, eliminating players one by one until we have a winner.
Regardless if you got voted out first or won the game, survivor Ōrewa has so much to offer. It is one of the biggest projects the outdoor education team takes on, but all worth it in the end. Thank you to all the players that fully immersed themselves and lived the game of survivor.
