Our College is one of the key pillars of our Waitakere Community. We represent approximately 1500 students, 250 teachers and staff, and 2000+ families, aiga, and whanau. So, it has been a privilege to start the year off with such positivity, energy and enthusiasm after Waitangi Day, celebrating and acknowledging our history. Our students want to be onsite learning, and as teenagers, that physical connection (albeit mask to mask) is crucial. They’re enjoying each other's company and the opportunities that come with onsite learning. It is great to have them back. Rest assured, as Omicron rolls through our community this term; we will continue to modify our plans to have as much onsite learning as possible. As teachers and staff in the school, students are one of our 'raison d'etre'- our reason for being. To have the College full of life and energy, with us setting goals with the students to be the best they can be; that makes us grateful for what we have. Long may it last. There will, of course, be hiccups as we go through this year, but as a College and Community, we will learn from our mistakes, respond proactively to the challenges, and keep an open mind to the task at hand. Our two pōwhiri for our new teachers and staff, and year 9 and new students were great celebrations led by our Kaumatua and Kuia, Warahi and Linda Paki, as well as Matua Marcus Nathuran, Whaea Pearl Snowden, and Whaea Sam La Hood. It is such a positive beginning for all who are new to our College and Community, and the leadership of the aforementioned is greatly valued. Ngā mihi. Another celebration is our ongoing academic success highlighted by our NZQA Academic Scholarship results. These represent the top 3% of students in a given subject across New Zealand. In 2021, 8 of our students achieved 12 scholarships. That’s outstanding! As I say, "strong school - strong community, strong community - strong school".
Ngā mihi,
Mark P Shanahan Principal
