| | Tena koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,I was discussing with some students the importance of the small, seemingly mundane aspects of life the other day. As we talked about why these little things hold purpose and meaning, I was reminded of Admiral William H. McRaven's speech at a graduation ceremony at the University of Texas, where he shared his top 10 learnings as a Navy SEAL. |
His most important learning is that "changing the world starts with making your bed." He emphasizes that this simple act sets a positive tone for the day, fostering discipline and attention to detail. He says, "If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. And by the end of the day, that one task will have turned into many tasks completed." (You can find the Youtube link here.)
His point resonates with me, highlighting the parallels between "making the bed" and meeting our college's expectations of arriving at school on time, attending classes promptly, being in the correct uniform with the right equipment, and striving for academic excellence. These basic and fundamental actions reflect a student's commitment to their personal best.
Admiral McRaven suggests that embracing the habit of making your bed cultivates a mindset of responsibility and accountability. Teachers and parents play a significant role in encouraging students to nurture these habits. Encouraging students to prioritize the basics, whether it's making their beds, being punctual, following uniform rules, or managing their time effectively, lays the foundation for success.
Have a great weekend,

Student Leaders Teach Cultural DanceDuring weeks 3 and 4 of term 1 our Level 3 dance classes focused on learning a fusion of Indian Dance styles. They were very fortunate to be taught by Indian cultural dancers and Howick College student leaders, Roma Kumar (Cultural Council Leader), and Prajna Chaudhry (Deputy Head Student and Ingham House Leader).
Our Dance Department is dedicated to introducing our students to as many dance styles and cultures as possible to create well-rounded and knowledgeable dancers. We are extremely proud of our students, who rose to the challenge of going outside their comfort zone to learn a dance style that was entirely new to them. Many thanks to Roma and Prajna for generouly sharing their culture and dance expertise. Roma Kumar centre front. | | Prajna Chaudhry back row, 3rd from right. |
E-PACS Lion Dance Troupe On Thursday 29 February, Howick College students marked the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations by attending a free lunchtime cultural performance by the E-PACS Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe. The show featured traditional drums, cymbals, costumes, and dance, creating a vibrant and joyful atmosphere that captivated the large crowd of students and staff who were drawn to the theatre.
The audience not only had the pleasure of watching the performance, they also had the opportunity to interact with the magnificent costumes and try their hand at drumming. A special mention to Y9 student drummer, Nevaeh Leou, who impressed the troupe with her natural sense of rhythm.
A big thank you goes to the Ingham House Leaders, Prajna Chaudhry and Alyssa Ready, and Ingham Dean Mrs Sundrum for organising this wonderful cultural experience. Well done to everyone involved!

Howick College Book of the WeekThe Impossible Story of Hannah Kemp by Leonie Agnew Hannah Kemp is dealing with a traumatic accident for which she was responsible. Struggling to come to terms with her guilt, she is ostracized in a community that condemns her. She deals with this by rebelling and pushing away anyone that offers kindness or seeks to understand her.
Crippled by her own guilt and anger, she comes across a mobile library bus where every book is the true story of someone's life, and realises that judgement of others is almost always shallow and uninformed. When she finds her own book … she also finds that her past can reshape her present.
This book is suitable for students in Years 9 – 13. Available to borrow from the temporary library located in L6 | | |
