Memorial
On Wed 26 October we had a memorial for Pam Buckwell, past ESOL teacher of Whangaparāoa College. Some of Pam's whānau, friends and colleagues shared some stories and memories and planted a rose bush in her honour, alongside a plaque. We then met up with some other of Pam's friends at Manly Bar and Grill. It was good to share some memories.
Rotoroa Island Trip
The thrill of being on the water on a school day set the tone for an awesome day on Rotoroa Island. 60 learners from Year 7 enjoyed the opportunity of seeing endemic birds and plants of Aotearoa which are not around where we live.
We had a look at putting nature first, learning further about Aotearoa’s flora, fauna and predators.
The Rotoroa Island programme is about community, listening to one another, and being kaitiaki and ambassadors for nature.
Young Enterprise Awards Ceremony
Last week the Young Enterprise Awards Ceremony took place.
Level 3 Business Studies learners Sena Brown, Lucas Ruperti and Freya Bissex represented our kura. They are the directors of Plant'N'Glass and won an award for Product Development.
Plant'N'Glass create handmade glass planters designed to hold small flower arrangements in glass bottles surrounded by a wooden frame. The unique value of their product is that they use 100% up-cycled materials. "We kept it local by locally sourcing all of their materials from our community. We are promoting: reduce, reuse and recycle as well as our slogan ‘Design, Don’t Destroy’."
Their products are a gorgeous example of kaitiakitanga and innovation.
Plant'N'Glass were for sale at Whangaparāoa's Matariki Celebration and other various markets in our community. They are also sold online at plant-n-glass.mystorbie.com
EnviroGroup
Did you know it is estimated that at least 25 million of our native birds, chicks, and eggs are killed every year by introduced pests such as rats? And since that number is so hard to reliably count, it is likely much higher in reality. Some experts, in fact, estimate it to be closer to 100 million. Here on the Hibiscus Coast, as many as 40% of our endemic species (found in no other country) are in serious trouble. As a result, Forest and Bird asks members of the community to take part in Pest Free Hibiscus Coast. The process to join is simple- you can complete the online sign up form on the Pest Free Hibiscus Coast- Forest and Bird website, or you can contact Andrea, the Pest Free Hibiscus Coast Community Hub Activator, at either [email protected] or 021 1759 839.
Regardless of which method you choose, Andrea will order a rat trap on your behalf, free of charge. All traps are easy to use, humane, and pet-safe, meaning that there is no risk any pets you may have will accidentally get caught in the trap. These traps also only need to be checked once a week, which is a quick process - great for the upcoming holidays. If you would like more information, you’re invited to contact Project Manager Jenny Hanwell at [email protected] or 020 4120 5512
On Thursdays after school, the EnviroGroup organises rubbish clean-ups and pest plant control around the school grounds. While animal pests such as rats or possums are given more attention, plants are just as big of a risk to our native species. Where possums outcompete our native animals and hunt them or their young, invasive plants in turn outcompete our native flora and drive them closer to extinction. In addition, they do not serve as food sources for our native animals, and are often toxic and/or irritants to humans and animals. For example, the invasive plant privet’s pollen is particularly irritating to the lungs and puts individuals with asthma at risk of an attack. All of these reasons make it vital to eliminate them from our ecosystems.
The plants lying sideways on the ground are examples of the pest plants privet, arum lily, and wild ginger. These were taken after they had been cut and the roots pasted with the appropriate weedkiller:

Authors Visit
It was a privilege to be chosen by Storylines NZ to host two amazing award winning authors Tania Roxborogh & Steph Matuku. Tania was a teacher at Whangaparāoa College and enjoyed revisiting our school. Both authors were compelling and captivating, our learners listened intently asking some great questions and left the presentation very inspired.
Year 11 Option: Treasure Chests
During our recent Year 11 programme, learners worked hard making treasure chests for the junior production Aladdin. These treasure chests were made completely from scratch using cardboard boxes and polystyrene. During this time there were lots of laughs as we worked together to create three chests that exceeded everyone's expectations.
Amazing Artwork ready for collection
The Whangaparāoa College Art department has lots of learner work from Years 8-11 that has not been collected. While we love having all this talent around us we don't have the space to store it. If your child has not collected their masterpieces please encourage them to do so from the Art department before the end of the year.
International Student End of Year Programme
Over the last week or two some of our senior International students have been enjoying our End Of Year Programme.
This year we joined with International students from Ōrewa College and the group have enjoyed visiting some of Auckland's best spots such as Waiheke Island and surfing at Muriwai Beach.
They have had a MasterChef style competition at Ōrewa College and created and printed their own artwork onto t-shirts here at Whangaparāoa College. The group spent two nights camping at Pakiri, and have explored the caves at Waipu which was a highlight.
Thanks to Ōrewa College for their wonderful hospitality.

Tamara Johnson
WGP Learner 2005 to 2010
I'm based on the North Shore in Albany, working as a Team Leader for Thermomix.
I spent twelve years working as a chef and travelling with my career. I worked in America, Scotland and Sweden in Michelin restaurants and had the best experiences!
I won Apprentice Chef of the Year in 2013 and was the Ambassador for Chefs for Service IQ in 2016. You will still see me in advertising for Chefs in their pamphlets!!
I ran Madam Woo as Head Chef at the ripe age of 23! And finished leading The Tasting Shed in Kumeu in Jan 2022.
Some of my favourite school memories were one athletics day when I went all out and painted myself red for our team! And then when we were lucky enough to have Opshop and Spasifix play concerts for us! My favourite teacher would have to be Mrs Tarr! Such an inspirational teacher and helped me find my passion for food. My advice for current learners would be to block out all of the noise, the dramas and the cliques. School is such a small part of your life and you really get to reinvent yourself once you're done. Give everything a go! Don't care what anyone else thinks. And make the most of every opportunity!!
