Term 3, Week 2, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tēnā  koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

I was excited to attend my first Howick College major production this week and loved every moment of it. "Blood Brothers" was a fantastic choice and marks the return of our annual productions since "Grease" in 2021. The show was a triumph in every respect, and everyone involved should be incredibly proud of their performances.

The head of our Arts Department, Mrs Dryden, led a dedicated team of teachers who supported this talented group of students through memorable performances each night. The production was also supported by a 10-piece band and a large backstage and technical crew. Students also played key roles in production, direction, and choreography, showcasing their diverse talents.

Like me, the audience was captivated by the story and in awe of the talent on display each night. I am immensely proud of everyone involved in this outstanding production. Participation in the arts requires heart, hard work, and talent, all of which were evident throughout this production. The smiles on faces and the positive conversations after each show were wonderful to see and hear.

I would also like to congratulate our junior girls' football team (more details below) on winning the Counties Manukau competition. I was thrilled to watch the second half of the final, where the team made a remarkable comeback from 1-0 down to beat Macleans College 4-1. This group has shown tremendous growth and development as players throughout the season and deeply appreciates the unwavering support from their parents, friends, and coach/manager.

Have a great weekend.

Dale Burden
Principal/Tumuaki

LOOKING BACK

1983 - Waharau Outdoor Education Centre Opens

Clockwise from top left: 1. Parents and students attend the official opening 2. The first 4th form classes to attend Camp Waharau 3. Kyayking was a new experience for many students 4. Bushcraft was a key focus of the EOTC experience.

On Saturday, 26 March 1983, the Waharau Outdoor Education Centre was officially opened by Governor-General Sir David Beattie. Located in the Hunua Ranges and overlooking the Firth of Thames, the camp was the joint venture of four secondary schools: Howick College, Rosehill College, Manurewa High School and Papakura High School. The purpose-built facility aimed to provide students with an outdoor experience that emphasised “reasonably strenuous physical activity including bushcraft, orienteering, and overnight camping.” Camps had previously been held at Totara Springs in Matamata, but it was hoped the closer location would encourage more involvement from parents.

Howick College raised over $200,000 towards the camp, which was described in the 1983 Howick College Yearbook as exceptional value with facilities second to none and “a credit to those who have put so much time into making it all come true." Financial contributors also included the Auckland Savings Bank, the McKenzie Trust Board, the City of Manukau, the Sir John Logan Campbell Trust, the Ministry of Recreation and Sport, the Rotary Clubs and Papakura City, among others.

It was expected that a variety of Howick College groups would use the camp for subject-based field trips, outdoor education camps such as the 4th and 7th form camps, and house and tutor group weekends, among other activities. The 1983 fourth form (Year 10 today) cohort was the first to experience the new centre, with groups of two classes staying for 3 days and 2 nights each from 28 February to 10 March. Despite the lack of bunks (these were added later), students greatly enjoyed activities such as hiking, orienteering, canoeing, archery, swimming, and bushcraft. The only disappointment was that the time was too short, so it was decided to increase future group sizes and move the fourth form camp to the end of the year.

Now overseen by Mr Wright, these very successful camps still occur at the end of each year, as a Year 9 camp for each of the six houses. The activities remain popular, with the addition of sailing, mountain biking, overnight tenting, and an exhilarating Burma trail. The High Ropes course is also used by our Year 13 and Year 10 Outdoor Education classes over the winter months.

PRACTICE EXAMS 2024

Year 11 - 13 students will sit practice exams in Week 9 of Term 3 from Monday 16 - Friday 20 September (exam timetable available here). During this time, senior students will be on study leave to prepare for their exams. We encourage all parents and caregivers to ensure their children are taking these exams seriously and making the most of the study time provided to prepare for their exams.

Practice exams are crucial as they provide students with a clear indication of their progress, highlighting any areas that need further attention before the external exams. They also serve as evidence for derived grades in the event of a legitimate absence during the NZQA exams.

Bus students please note
: Buses run at their normal times during practice exams. Students finishing early or late will need to find an alternative way home.

GIVING BLOOD SAVES LIVES

The NZ Blood Collection team will be at Howick College on Monday, 19 August, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in the theatre.

Encouraging students to donate blood is vital for fostering a lifetime habit of contributing to their community. Individuals aged 16 and over can independently decide to donate blood according to the Care of Children Act 2004. NZBS recommends that students discuss this decision with their families. If there are any objections, please inform the student and the school before the blood drive.

Parents are also welcome to donate on the day. NZBS respects the privacy of all donors and recommends sensitive conversations around blood donor eligibility. For more information, please call 0800 GIVE BLOOD (0800 448 325) or visit www.nzblood.co.nz

Junior Football Girls Win Final

On Wednesday, our junior football girls faced off against Macleans College, competing for first and second place in the Counties Manukau Junior competition for 2024.  Earlier in the season, the girls suffered their only loss to Macleans, despite their impressive record of 8 wins out of 9 games. Last night, with Macleans having home advantage, the first half was a tough battle. Macleans put the first points on the board with a penalty just before half time.

Determined and focused, the girls came into the second half ready to fight. Ava Grant’s corner kick levelled the score and reignited their fire. From then on, it was all Howick College as Macleans struggled to get the ball out of their own half. Maddison Fitzpatrick scored the second goal, Jasmine Green added a third, and Maddison scored again to seal a convincing 4-1 victory!

The team has shown remarkable growth and demonstrated their progress with this well-deserved win. They finished the competition with a total of 24 points, 77 goals scored and only 10 goals conceded!

A huge thank you to coaches Stephanie Branch and Amelia Jefferies, and to all the supporters who braved the weather to cheer the team on!

Kanga Cup Delivers an Enriching Experience

Nathan Cox (left) with fellow referee.  Right: In action officiating at a Kanga Cup match.

Recently, Nathan Cox (Y12) had the incredible opportunity to represent NRF at the Kanga Cup in Canberra, Australia. The initial days at the refereeing academy were focused on team building and briefings. Throughout the week-long tournament, Nathan worked with referees from across Australia, including junior referees and senior referee coaches. Meeting A-League and FIFA referees provided inspiring insights into the potential career paths in refereeing.

Living and eating together at the Kanga Cup Referee Youth Academy, the 30-strong refereeing group quickly formed strong bonds, offering invaluable support on and off the field. Each day began with a 6:30am breakfast followed by a short van ride to the fields. Referees officiated 3 to 4 games daily, followed by an hour-long cool down session in the local pools. Nathan refereed across the U14, U15, and U16 Mixed and Girls grades and was honoured to officiate the U15 Mixed Plate Semi-Final and the U15 Mixed Cup Grand Final.

Evenings were filled with activities, seminars, and team bonding. Nathan found the experience enriching and expressed his gratitude to NRF for this opportunity. He hopes that sharing his experiences will encourage more young people to pick up a whistle and become referees in the sport they love.
