Kia ora koutou,

I trust you are well as we head towards a deserved long weekend.

It was disappointing to have to postpone 2 major events originally planned for this Term, both the school production and Year 8 camp are in the process of attempting to be reorganised for later in the school year and you will be advised once these dates have hopefully been confirmed.

It has been enjoyable getting out and about seeing Orewa College students being involved in a range of curricular and extracurricular activities.  On Wednesday evening in the Arts and Events Centre, we will celebrate the success and achievements of our students in the core areas of academia, cultural, performing arts and sports.  Over 150 students across all 7 year groups will be acknowledged in this Term 2 'Achievement Evening'.

On Friday the staff at the primary schools and Orewa College which make up the Kāhui Ako ki Orewa (Orewa Learning Community) will meet and share practices, experiences and listen to an inspiring great speaker from the educational world.  This event is at Silverdale School and starts at 1pm, therefore students will be released early on this day i.e. 12.05pm so that the teachers can travel to the event in time.

As soon as the news about the proposed industrial action on Thursday which potentially affects Year 12 students is clarified I will let you know,

Enjoy the looming long weekend.

Ngā mihi

Pink Shirt Day

Friday 19th May we celebrated the diversity of our school and expressed kindness and inclusion through wearing pink, writing encouraging notes to others and supporting the Mental Health Foundation with a bake sale and sausage sizzle.
The student council did a fabulous job organising a photo booth and the fundraisers.
Thank you to the generous whanau (families) that allowed their taitamariki (young people) to bake their tasty cupcakes, slices and cookies.
The school raised $806 for the Mental Health Foundation.

PPTA Teacher Strike Action

The strike scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled.  All Year 13 students are expected at school.

The remaining scheduled strike days remain unchanged at this point in time.
Please note Thursday 1 June for Year 12 students.

Level 2 Historical Amazing Race

On Tuesday 23 May, students taking Level 2 History and Level 2 HISE had the opportunity to head into Auckland to take part in our annual Historical Amazing Race.
Students organised themselves into groups and were given a series of challenges that took them around the city discovering its past.

Challenges included finding the spot the Rainbow Warrior was bombed, creating a protest poster about the Vietnam War and marching down Queen St as well as taking a look at the Old Barracks Wall at Auckland University.
Students rose to the challenge and embraced learning about our city's past while also completing some novelty challenges like finding an example of "Love being in the air".
The winning team who won the race was ‘Speedy Sped’ with a total of 35 points and they will be treated to a lunch of their choice in the next couple of days.
A great day to get out of the classroom and do some hands-on historical learning.

Year 7 & 8 North Harbour Football Girls Zone Day

Last Tuesday our Year 7 & 8 Football girls competed in the North Harbour Football Zone day. The girls had a superb day, winning the plate final.
Some great performances from our players, but overall, it was the teamwork of the girls that was very pleasing to see.
They played 4 games, won 2, drew 1 and lost 1 scoring 5 and conceding just 1 goal all day.
Special acknowledgement to Emily Clement who was injured, we wish her a speedy recovery.
Well done to the team.

School finishes early Friday 02 June

Friday 02 June all students will finish at 12.05pm, as our teachers attend the Orewa Kāhui Ako Conference.

Legally Blonde the Musical

Thank you to everyone for your patience as we rearrange our dates for Legally Blonde the Musical.

We are still awaiting word from the rights holders of the production for our new proposed dates - these things do take time with clearance needing to come from the U.S.A.

Once we have heard we will certainly let everyone know via the High Tide newsletter and social media channels and we will get the tickets back on sale again, as well as adjust dates for those already sold.

In the meantime, we continue to rehearse and we are still very excited to bring this entertaining, cleverly written musical to the stage here at Orewa College.

Level 2 Geography Trip

Who says you can't plan the weather?!

Last week the Level 2 Geography class ventured down to Tongariro National Park to bask in the late autumn sunshine and immerse themselves in the spectacular natural environment.

Here they scaled volcanoes and completed fieldwork to better understand the landscape and alpine climate.
