Kia ora koutou,

The end of Term 1 is fast approaching.  This is always a particularly busy time for both staff and students, as we collectively work to complete units of work and outstanding assessments.

You would have received the Term 1 Progress report which outlines, both, academic progress and learning skills development.  This will form the basis of the Academic Conference, which you are invited to on Wednesday 5th April at a time convenient to yourself.  As you are aware, we are transitioning into 'Academic Conferences' where the teacher (Kaiārahi), family and students can engage in a meaningful 15 minute discussion about academic progress.

On Saturday 1st April, Orewa College is having a community day (Te Ahu a Rea - Fostering Cultural Growth).  There will be music, dance/cultural performances, various stalls and of course a hāngi.  Please come along and enjoy this inaugural event.

Best of luck to our girls and boys 'premier' Volleyball Teams who are competing at the National Tournament this week.

Principal

Year 8 2022 Mural

The completed mural which is now up on the wall on the building next to room one in middle school was originally designed in 2021 by Felicity Fang and Izzy Goldbert in their elective term.
It was completed in 2022 by Bhavitha Kotra, Bhumi Patel, Celeste Heaney, Emily Bennett, Pérola Oliveira Heaphy-Page, Yenushka Moodley, Brindley Street, Dhriti Chudasama, Abby Birks, Lumē Pretorius and Felicity Fang.
The mural depicts the opportunities offered throughout the school, the values of Manaaki Orewa and the motto of "Get World Ready" for the future.
Mrs Boshard is incredibly proud of these students and their amazing artwork.

Seikon Gakuin Junior High School Visit

Seikon Gakuin Junior High School from Yokohama in Japan had 20 students visiting Orewa College for 6 days over the last two weeks.
The students have been visiting classes with their kiwi buddy who is learning Japanese. They have been taught the Haka by our senior Maori students, visited Year 8 classes to exchange what life is like in their Japanese school, played Volleyball with PE classes and visited Orewa Beach and Tree Adventures.
The students have really enjoyed their experience and the OC students who have come into contact with them have been enriched too.

Level 2 Biology Rocky Shore Trip

Finally the weather was working in the favour of Orewa College and we had a glorious, sunny day to walk to North Orewa along the beach to take a close look at the different species living there.
The students showed great determination to march at a pace up the beach.
Gathering this data is vital to the success of two different assessments in Biology, so it was a big afternoon but they were ready for it and worked so well together, showing great respect for the environment the whole time.
It was great for the students to finally see all these special little creatures we have been talking about in class. All the conversations and mahi fell into place when seeing all this beautiful, local biology in action.
Ka pai Year 12 Biologists!

Bus News - New Sticker System - Term 2 2023

Instead of separate Bus Pass Photo ID cards (which were costing $9 each) we will be use BUS STICKER PASSES (that only cost $2) that can be stuck onto your current STUDENT ID CARDS from Term 2 (Wednesday 26 April)

All students that catch any bus will need to show a Bus Code Of Conduct sticker on their Student ID card while boarding any bus. There will also be a priority boarding system to ensure that students that are using the bus to get HOME are allowed to board first.

If you have your Student ID card and have filled out the Bus Code Of Conduct and Bus Registration forms, then please come to collect your Bus Pass Sticker from Mr Little in room S10 during interval or lunchtime.
There is a $2 fee that bus users must agree to pay for their first Bus Pass Sticker, however if a sticker is lost there is a $5 replacement fee.

If you have any questions please see Mr Little in Room S10 or email [email protected]

PPTA Teacher Strike

Wednesday 29 March is a National PPTA Teacher Strike day.
Students do not attend school on this day and there will be no school bus service.

Parking - Corner Wainui & Kowhai Roads

It has been brought to the school's attention that there are issues with parents parking in such a way as to impede school buses.  The 205 bus is having difficulty with pickup and drop off for students with cars parking in the bus stop and along Kowhai Road which makes it difficult for the bus to exit.
Please keep our students safe by avoiding parking in these areas.

House Competition Pavement Art

Last week we had our annual Pavement Art house competition. Students were broken into two groups, years 7-10 and years 11-13, each consisting of about 5-10 students. Each group were given a brief, a couple of boxes of coloured chalk, a 1.25m square and three hours to create a pavement masterpiece.

This year, the middle school students' theme was to recreate your house hero as though they were an animated Simpson family member.
The senior's theme was to Recreate their house hero using Roy Lichtenstein’s artistic style.

Both year groups did a fantastic job, over the years students have come up with new and creative ways to get the best out of their pieces of art. No longer do we just have chalk on concrete, these students have tape, water spray bottles, sponges, brushes and other tools to make their pieces of art pop out of the sidewalk.

After three houses of drawing each house and year group delivered a stunning and colourful piece of art.
A big thank you to our judges Richard Wells, Jenny White and ex-student Olivia Ansell.

Sheila Winn Festival Dress Rehearsal

Orewa College are submitting FIVE student-directed Shakespeare scenes for judging, with some being selected to perform at the national festival in Wellington in June.

As part of their preparation and rehearsal, the students are running a dress rehearsal in the Drama studio at 6pm on Tuesday 28th March

We encourage friends and whanau to attend, with a gold coin.  A performance needs an audience, and after a long Covid-enforced absence, these 27 wonderful and committed students really deserve lots of support. See you there!
