Kia ora koutou,

Fortunately Orewa College has fared well with no damage incurred as a result of the very poor weather in the Auckland region yesterday and this morning.

It is very pleasing to see the high level of engagement of students across all year groups in the winter sports programme, Duke of Edinburgh Programme, debating, school production 'Legally Blond' and in a number of performing arts/cultural activities.

Students engaged and involved outside of the classroom, from my experience, also tend to perform well in their academic studies.

Currently we are collating evidence from the start of the year of our highest performing students in all areas of school life.  These students will be acknowledged at our 'Achievement Evening' on the 18th of May in the Arts and Events Centre.

I am sure that you are all aware of the ramifications that occur when social media is not used appropriately within our community.  At Orewa College, there is the requirement that appropriate use occurs at all times in social media forums as per the 'Digital Citizenship Agreement'.  Unfortunately this does not always happen as you know and currently there is an issue within a particular year group in the Middle School.  This is being responded to in a consistent manner, via our internal processes and your support regarding this is much appreciated.

We all need to work collectively as a community, day in, day out, to ensure that there is always a safe and supportive environment at Orewa College.

Ngā mihi

Principal

Duke of Ed Tawharanui Trip

On Friday we took a group of 28 keen Duke of Ed students to Tawharanui for their first overnight  Adventurous Journey trip.
The students were awesome- they were resilient, worked well in a team, and really showed great determination on the hike and camping in the cold temperatures.
Thanks to the staff and students who came for making it such a wonderful experience!

Enviro-Tip

Despite the shocking statistics behind fast fashion, we love how NZ’s own icebreaker clothing company have teamed up with ‘UPPAREL’ in an innovative way to reduce textile wastage.
The company will collect all brands of pre-loved garments and repurpose them to prevent them from going into the landfill. Check out how they do it and where you can drop your old clothes to here.

Found - Pounamu

We normally send all unclaimed lost property to the Red Cross, however we have a few items from last year that may hold special value to our students.
We have several pounamu and pieces of jewellery, please send your child to the main reception if you think one of these items may be theirs.

Careers Hub

'You don't know what you don't know' is a statement that I often use when encouraging our students to do some investigation into what they might want to do when they leave school.
Across the next 3 weeks students have the opportunity to hear from a variety of universities in school as well as attend the North Shore Schools Careers and Pathways Expo held at the
North Harbour Stadium on Wednesday 10th & Thursday 11th May.
Hours are Wednesday
11am to 2:30pm and 4pm to 7:30pm and
Thursday
9:30am to 2:30pm and 4pm to 7:30pm.
Parents are encouraged to join their students at the expo.

On Thursday 11th May, all Auckland schools are closed for the strike - what are your student/s doing? Perhaps they could head along to North Harbour Stadium to gain ideas or firm up their thoughts around what they will do once they leave school.

Upcoming events in school
Monday 8th May - ILT - AUT & UoA universities in the OAEC
Monday 15th May - ILT - Canterbury & Otago universities in the OAEC
You will always miss 100% of the opportunities that you don't take!
