4 March 2024

Kia ora tatou,

This week has started off a bit cooler but certainly no less busier. It began with Year 7, Education Outside the Classroom Week (which actually goes over 2 weeks) and ends with our first House Event of the year (House Party) on Friday.  In between, there are numerous meetings, rehearsals, practises, Maori whanau hui, NCEA Information evening, and of course, engagement in learning inside the classrooms.

The Board of Trustees, continue their mahi to appoint a new principal.  The pool of candidates was large and formidable but the Board were able to complete the first short listing.  Next weekend there will be meetings of candidates by a Board and Staff panel.

It was a real pleasure to be at the Achievers Celebration last Thursday. Those parents and caregivers that attended, you can be very proud of your students as they achieve academic excellence.  To those students, be aware you bring pride to Orewa College, continue to pursue your passions and know that your accomplishments are recognised and celebrated.

Ngā mihi

Anna Kenny
Acting Principal

Student Health and Safety

Health Centre Nurses

We are fortunate enough to have very professional nurses in our health centre.  The Nurses have asked us to remind parents that the nurses are not running a medical centre. Please ensure that all prior to school, health concerns are addressed at home. Re-dressing, re-strapping, investigating of past injuries, minor injuries which happened weeks ago etc, are not part of their work.  They are here to deal with anyone who requires immediate assistance.  Our Red Card students as always have direct access to the nurses.

Our staff are working with the nurses to ensure identification of when students should be sent to the nurses, is clear and procedures are followed.  Also, the nurses have asked that you are reminded about keeping your student at home if they have respiratory illnesses until they are symptom free.

Traffic Control

With many of our students entering and exiting our three gateways at the front of the school, we ask that you as parents and caregivers take extreme care while navigation the school grounds and surrounding streets. Here are a few tips to help everyone stay safe.

  • Remind your student not to ride their bikes and scooters inside the school grounds.
  • Please do not enter the school grounds, unless it is an emergency, between 2.45 and 3.45pm.
  • Encourage your students to be dropped off and picked up well away from the front gates.
  • Do not drop students off at the crossing.

Level 1 Design and Visual Communication Trip

The Level 1 Design and Visual Communication course visited Object Space last Wednesday to see a collection of 110 chairs that span over 107 years.

The exhibition was an amazing range of designs that are both familiar and experimental examples of an everyday design object.

This research trip will assist students in designing their own seating solutions for their chosen briefs in the local community.

Parent/Caregiver Contact Details

Due to a network upgrade, there will be no internet at the school on Friday for House Party Day and it is imperative that student information is correctly recorded in case we need to contact parents/caregivers.

Please check that your contact details: names, address, phone numbers, email addresses are up to date.

Details may be updated through the schoolbridge app or via email to: [email protected]

Band Camp 2024

This year Orewa College took over fifty students to our annual Band Camp. Band Camp this year saw students from Year 13 all the way down to Year 8 attending, all of which were hyped as soon as the bus arrived at camp.

Every single student gave it their all throughout each rehearsal, no matter whether they were in Symphonic Band, Concert Band or Senior Jazz Band.  After each hard practice session, the students would munch down on seconds and thirds of their favourite meals from the camp.

On Saturday evening all students changed into their costumes to the theme of “Rhyme without Reason” and even a certain AC/DC member turned up thanks to Mr Wilkin’s “Rock Lobster” costume. All the students danced their hearts out to classic songs and some new songs.

After the party, all the students crashed into their dormitories and had a good long sleep before performing Sunday morning for all parents to listen to. We had a new band appearance of The Quintet followed by Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Senior Jazz ended the whole performance off with some stunning solos.

Many thanks to all senior students and staff both from Orewa College and Willow Park camp for helping make the camp as magical as it was.

Careers Hub

Throughout the course of the year we have various people visit the school to speak with students, particularly with the senior students.

In the coming weeks we have people coming in to speak about careers in the Health industry and then also Queenstown Resort College. These opportunities are advertised in the Daily Notices for senior students to take advantage of the ILT slot on Wednesday's.

Next term we have all eight of New Zealand's universities to speak (all 8 are in the top 3% of the world's universities) to senior students.  Students are encouraged to also seek out opportunities to speak with people who work in areas that they are interested in, and potentially find related work experience, particularly in their school holidays.

This can assist with students becoming more self-aware, as well as having the opportunity to explore possibilities for their future pathway.
