Dear Parents/Caregivers
Kia Ora Tatou

I would like to acknowledge the tragic passing of James Gallagher in a car accident last Sunday morning. James was a former student of South Otago High School who left at the end of Year 13 in 2019. James is remembered as a kind and quiet young man who was respected by staff and peers alike. The thoughts of the staff and school community are with the family at this difficult time.

With the seniors now well under way with their NCEA exams and on study leave we have offered the opportunity to our Year 10 students to take on the responsibility of the  junior student council. The following students have been appointed as our new school leaders until the end of the year and will be involved in organising and leading a number of activities for the Year 9 and 10 students. The student leaders are:
  • Annaliese Bisset
  • Bree Campbell
  • Courtney Jelley
  • Ulysses Cu
  • Luka May
  • Poppy Johnstone

Canteen closed Tuesday 15 November
Next week the school canteen will be closed for the day on Tuesday 15 November. This will be particularly important for the Year 10 students who will be on site. The Year 9 students are working off site for the day and will need their own packed lunch and drinks for the day.

Activities days
As the end of the year approaches, teachers are organising activities and events for Year 9 and 10 students to participate in. The options are very varied and cater for a lot of interests from Art and crafts to adventurous tramps and mountain biking. Some of these activities do have a cost and I would ask that parents ensure that the associated charges are paid prior to the event.

From past experience, I know students thoroughly enjoy their time away and have a great time

Year 8 School visits
Next week on Wednesday and Thursday we will be hosting Year 8 students from our contributing schools as they come onto site to learn a little about the school and to become familiar with the school which they will be starting in 2023. We look forward to meeting our new students and will be encouraging them to ask questions during the day!

Finally
The year 9 and 10 students should now be starting to talk to their teachers about what is going to be assessed in the junior exams which start on 22 November. Students are encouraged to prepare for these assessments as it will provide information that will be used to support each individual to achieve their full potential in 2023 and beyond.
