Pride - The bravest thing you can be is yourself |
It was lovely to see all of our students putting the theme of Mitamita on display throughout Sāmoan language week. Mitamita is about being proud of your language, in particular its link to ancestry, spirituality and family. As a college, we celebrate all cultural diversity all of the time but on the yearly occasion of each language week, it is an added opportunity for all students to be involved and to be proud of identity and culture and what each has to offer. We are all constantly learning about each other and each other's cultures and traditions and that is the fantastic thing about living in the largest Polynesian city in the world.
This week we have been talking to assemblies about key figures who we have pride in as a nation, one such national treasure is Sir Edmund Hillary. This figure was chosen because Monday this week was the anniversary of his amazing feat of being the first in the world to conquer Mount Everest. Although facts that are lesser known about him is his resilience in overcoming adversity. He was severely burnt in an army accident in the mid-1940s and went through a lengthy recovery to then, years later accomplish his ultimate climb. Sir Ed was a compassionate man who was a true humanitarian using his fame and the support that comes with that, he helped the Nepalese people build a schools and hospitals and back here in Aotearoa he contributed to Sir Edmund Hillary College in South Auckland as well as an outdoor pursuit centre in the central plateau which has also supported Waitākere College over the years in giving students an opportunity in learning and developing their skills in the outdoors and build their self-confidence.
I look to sir Ed for his wisdom and manawanui and often encourage students with his words, when asked how he felt after reaching the highest point on earth, Hillary replied, “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves”.
Kei tēnā, kei tēnā, kei tēnā anō tōna ake āhua, tōna ake mauri, tōna ake mana.
Each and every one has their own uniqueness, life essence and presence
