28 August 2023

Kia ora koutou,

Week 7 of Term 3 is upon us, the sun is shining and spring awaits.

This week we have a number of teams competing in the National Secondary Schools Tournament Week including hockey, rugby, basketball and netball.

I know how positive an experience this is for these students and everyone else involved.  Upon their return, senior students then have a full week to prepare for their 'Grading Examinations' which run from Friday 8th to Friday 15th September.

Last week a large number of students represented the college in the Auckland Regional Dance NZ Made Competition achieving 2 placings.  A fine achievement.

House Competitions continue and these are very important in engaging students positively in the winter months.  There was not a spare seat in the Arts and Events Centre for last week's House Battle of the Bands.

All departments at the college are focussing on the 'Classroom Agreement' and the need to consistently ensure that our core non-negotiable rules are being adhered to.

A reminder that phones are not required in class unless teachers specifically state that phones can be used (which is extremely rare).  Your ongoing support here is much appreciated.

At this stage of the term and year, it is vital that all students focus completely on their learning needs and prioritise specifically what is required in order for them to be academically successful in 2023.

House -  Battle of the Bands!

It's the second year of this rocking competition, it was all noise and amazing talent!

All houses have put together a band and have been practising all term. They can only use musicians from their house, with the guidance of the senior students and staff.

On Friday, Orewa College absolutely packed out the Arts and Event centre, made a lot of noise and all houses gave the audience a fantastic performance.   It is so awesome seeing all year levels work and jam together. The audience showed great Manaaki as they supported not just their house, but all houses.

Here were the final placings for the house battle of the bands;

Our determined Youth 14, proudly faced off against Rosmini in the thrilling final of the Harbour competition. Despite not clinching the victory, our boys showcased incredible resilience. Rising from a fourth-place position in the rounds and toppling the leading Mahurangi College in the semis, they exhibited unwavering perseverance until the last whistle blew. The final score 5-19
On Sunday, the team heads to Wellington, geared up for the Hurricanes Youth 14 Rugby Festival. We extend our best wishes to them for a successful trip. May this be a time of creating lots of memories. Lets fly the OC flag high and with pride!

Enviro-Group New Waste Bins

The Orewa College Enviro-group are proud to show off their new coloured waste sorting bins, to replace the motley bins/boxes/bags previously used.

This means there is consistency amongst the classrooms. There are currently 25 sets within our Year 7 & 8 classrooms and the intention is for this to expand to other areas of the school in time. Some of our Enviro-group students have made an educational video to help with the use of these bins.

Take a look at this 3 min video, showcasing our bins and how they work here at Orewa College.

The Wonder Project

Year 7 students in Mr Doyle's class have been participating in the Wonder Project in Term 3.
The Wonder Project is Engineering New Zealand’s free programme for schools, designed to get young Kiwis excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

“The Wonder Project is a series of programs that connect to students' learning. We have been doing the power challenge. In the first lesson, we had a lot of fun making the LED light, light up using copper wire as a conductor. I love doing this twice a week because it gives me a break from all the other classwork. In the end, this helps me focus and I look forward to doing it again in the future.”

Orewa College Blood Drive

Last Thursday Orewa College students and staff participated in our annual blood drive for New Zealand Blood.  Did you know that one blood donation can save up to 3 lives?

Staff and students made 56 individual donations, which helped save the lives of 168 Kiwis.
From these 56 donations, 45 were from first-time donors.

Thank you to everyone for being part of this incredibly worthwhile day.

Ruud 'The Bugman's' Visit

Last week our Year 8 classes were treated to a visit from Ruud Kleinpaste, aka The Bugman.

During his three-day visit, each class spent time with him in the classroom - hearing wondrous stories of bugs, spiders, and insects and even meeting them in the flesh (if they dared!) They then took to the outdoors and went exploring with Ruud to find insects in their natural environments. The purpose of this visit was to inspire and educate about habitats and biodiversity.

Each class will be developing their own garden space at school where the students will be researching what needs to be done to encourage biodiversity in their space. They'll be looking into purposeful planting, insect homes, pest eradication, and educational signage. Watch this space!

International Students Rangitoto Island Trip

The International Students, who take New Zealand Experience, visited Auckland's iconic Rangitoto Island on Friday 18th August, as part of their course, learning about Auckland’s geology.

Students got the bus to Auckland City and then the Ferry to the Island. They climbed to the summit, stopping to explore the lava caves on the way.

The views from the top were stunning and worth the climb up!

Careers Hub

All Year 11 & 12 students have attended a presentation regarding the possibility of doing Gateway as a subject next year.

This is a great way for students to get a taste of what they may wish to do in the future by doing one day a week work placement. Each student needs to pick up an application form and return it to the Careers Hub by the end of the week (Friday 1st September).

Year 13 students who are applying for university should have completed their applications and if they are needing accommodation, will need to complete the information required for Careers to complete a reference for this.

We have universities coming in over the next few weeks to assist with Course Planning, beginning with Waikato University on Monday 28th August; Victoria University of Wellington on Wednesday 6th September.

Open Days are occurring at this time too - Unitec on Saturday 2nd September; Canterbury University on Friday 8th September; Lincoln University on Friday 29th September.
