Bonjour, Hola, Nī hāo, Konnichiwa, Guten Tag, Marhaban, Goeie dag almal, Talofa, Mālō e lelei, Bula vinaka, Namaste, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia orāna, Tēnā koutou katoa.
Nau mai ki te wiki o ngā reo o te ao. (Welcome to international languages week)
To celebrate international languages week I will share an old whakataukī (proverb), which is centred around the importance of maintaining, enhancing and strengthening language and culture:
Ko tōku reo tōku ohooho, ko tōku reo tōku māpihi maurea. (My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul)
Embracing International Language Week offers a platform to celebrate, explore, and advocate for the rich tapestry of languages and cultures within our schools and communities in Aotearoa New Zealand. While this week facilitates the awareness of language fluency in various ways, it also promotes oneself to further discover the cultural essence that brings vibrancy to our community and connection between people.
Keeping within the theme of international, on Monday 10 June, we welcomed back to Orewa College, Peter Aubin from Osaka Kun-ei Girls High School who visited three of his amazing students Yume Hasui, Yui Nomura and Kokoro Omori. Further to this, we discussed the progression of the exchange scholarship programme, which was established in 2023, between Kun-ei High School and Orewa College. Two students from Orewa College, Kelly Derbyshire-Smith (Year 11) and Zoe Grieshaber (Year 12) are currently on this scholarship programme at Osaka Kun-ei from April to October. An awesome experience for our students, which we look forward to having on offer for years to come.
Lastly, I want to send an early congratulations to our ShowQuest team, the students and staff, who are competing at the Auckland event on Wednesday night. I was fortunate to witness their rehearsal on Sunday, and the amount of time, effort, planning and choreography this team has put into their performance is outstanding. A true testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, and in particular, their teachers.
Nāku noa, nā,
Wiri Warriner Tumuaki | Principal Orewa College

Lions Speech Competition - Orewa College Dominates EventNatalie Sou and Maria Walker-Kinnell represented Orewa College at the 2024 Lions Young Speechmakers Competition - Auckland Regional level over King's birthday weekend.
They had to give a prepared speech and an impromptu speech with only one minute's preparation. Against very tough competition and under extreme pressure they both showed manaaki and performed with beyond excellent speaking skills.
Maria placed 1st and Natalie came 3rd against schools from across Auckland which is a remarkable result.
Thanks to Daryl Crosby, Youth Chairman of the Orewa Lions Club for supporting the speakers and funding the competition.
Maria and Natalie will represent Auckland at the National competition in Wellington in August. The school is very proud of both of them. |

Blues Youth LeadershipOn Tuesday 4 June, our Youth 15 rugby boys headed to the Blues Headquarters to attend the Stamp them Blue experience.
The players were shown through the training facility where they looked around the team kitchen, video room, physio room and strength and conditioning facility.
The team chef and nutritionist talked to them about the importance of fueling and gave an insight into how the professionals ate and trained, and then the boys were taken through the history of the club, and learnt about leadership styles and what qualities the Blues value in their leadership group.
To top the learning off, they got to watch the team training in their preparation for the Super Rugby finals, and were lucky enough to meet some of the players (even some All Blacks!) on their way back into the facility. | | |
It was an awesome and inspiring experience for our young athletes. A big thank you to Harrison and the team for hosting us. |

International Students - Tiritiri Matangi Island |
| | On Thursday 6 June, both of the New Zealand Experience classes went to Tiritiri Matangi island to explore New Zealand’s nature.
In the last few weeks we've learned a lot about New Zealand's native birds and plants and we had the opportunity to see them in real life on the island.
A couple of highlights of this trip were the ferry ride, the light tower on the top of the island and the blue penguins which we saw in their burrow.
