Term 2, Week 7, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tēnā  koutou, e te whānau o Howick College,

It's hard to believe that the school year is rapidly approaching the halfway mark and for senior students, it is well over halfway. For the leadership team, this time has provided us with a great opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made towards achieving our annual goals, which over a three-year period will fulfil the plans outlined in our 2024-26 Strategic Plan (click on the image below for details)

Strategic plans provide organisations with a sense of direction and purpose. They present a big picture that can be broken up into annual plans with achievable and measurable goals and targets

Click on the image above for an enlarged view

Our strategic direction over the next three years has been set, and three key area have been identified. We aim to establish a culture of continuous improvement, where we constantly reflect and review how we can do things better next time. We want our people (students, staff, community) to feel valued and have a strong sense of belonging to our college. We also aim to cultivate a culture where expectations are high in all areas of the college, from how students present themselves to how the grounds and facilities are maintained.

I am pleased to report that our " mid year stock take" has revealed great progress. We are well on the way to achieving our annual goals for 2024 and therefore making large strides towards achieving our strategic goals for 2024- 2026.

Have a great weekend.

LOOKING BACK

1991 - Farewell Mr Don Ingham

Founding Principal, Mr Don Ingham (1974 - 1991)

Just before Easter 1991, Howick College founding principal, Mr Don Ingham, retired after 17 years of dedicated service. During his tenure, he made an outstanding contribution to Howick College and took great pride in the college's many unique qualities.

Board Chairman, Mr Ian Gardiner, acknowledged Mr Ingham's "absolute commitment to the pupils and staff, his leadership, his professional expertise, his foresight, and his unwavering belief in the need to build self-esteem and personal qualities in young people." Mr Gardiner also commended his "flexibility in the face of dramatic changes in the education system over almost two decades."

As a mark of respect, the newly created fifth Howick College House was named in Mr Ingham's honour.

MINERVA HOUSE - WARM CLOTHES FOR WINTER DRIVE

From left: Martha Fenn, Lucie Lonie and  Mrs Gillet with appreciative Panmure Intermediate representatives.

This term, Minerva House has been dedicated to collecting warm clothes for families in need. Over the past six weeks, generous Minerva families have donated hundreds of jumpers, jackets, track pants, jeans, and blankets. On Monday, Mrs Gillett (Minerva Dean), along with Minerva House leaders Martha Fenn and Lucy Lonie, visited Panmure Bridge School to drop off the clothes and meet with the students. It was a humbling experience; Lucy expressed how wonderful it felt to give back to the community, and Martha thoroughly enjoyed meeting the students who would benefit from the donations.

A huge thank you to all the families who donated clothes. The school was incredibly grateful for your kindness and generosity.

HEALTH CENTRE

Physiotherapy Email Bookings

We're pleased to introduce our new physiotherapy email address: [email protected]. This dedicated email is now the primary method for booking appointments with our physiotherapist, who maintains regular availability throughout the week by appointment.

If you're a new patient this year, it's important to complete a consent form before your appointment. You can fill out the form online by visiting https://forms.finger-ink.com/total-body-physio/patient-intake-consent. For patients under 16, please note that a caregiver must complete this form. After completing the consent form, please notify us via the provided email address. This allows us to promptly schedule your appointment during school hours for your convenience.

Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please contact us via the above email.

Students Unwell At School

If students are feeling unwell during class, they will need to obtain a permission slip from their classroom teacher to go to the Health Centre, students can also choose to drop-in during interval or lunchtime. The nurse will assess the student's health and, if necessary, contact their parents/caregivers for their consent to send the student home. If contacted by the nurse to pick up their child, parents can collect the student from the Health Centre and sign them out of school.

Students are NOT to contact their parents/caregivers directly to make their own arrangements to go home. If your chld contacts you independently, please encourage them to go to the Health Centre for assessment.

BYOD LAPTOP EXPECTATIONS REMINDER

All students are expected to have a suitable BYOD laptop for use in the classroom and at home. Our teachers prepare lessons with the assumption that these devices are available, and without them, it can be more challenging for students to learn.

We understand that 'things happen,' and therefore, we have a supply of laptops and chargers that we can loan to students on a daily basis. However, in recent weeks, we have seen a significant surge in demand for these devices, far beyond our capacity to support.

To provide your child with the best learning opportunities, please make sure they bring a fully charged laptop and its charger to school every day. If the device is damaged, please have it repaired promptly. If there are any issues with the device, the school's IT Department is happy to assist with resolving them.

If you have difficulty providing or repairing a laptop, please contact your child’s Dean as the first point of contact. A description of suitable devices can be found on our website.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL

Last year, we achieved a record $3,155 for our charities and hope to do even better this year!

HOWICK COLLEGE LIBRARY - BOOK OF THE WEEK

Twenty Seven Minutes by Ashley Tate

For the last ten years, the small town of West Wilmer has been struggling to answer one question: on the night of the crash that killed his sister, why did it take Grant Dean twenty-seven minutes to call for help? If he'd called sooner, Phoebe might still be alive. As the anniversary of Phoebe's death approaches, Grant is consumed by his memories and the secret that's been suffocating him for years. But he and Phoebe weren't the only ones in the car that night. Becca was there too - she's the only other person who knows what really happened… Or is she?

Everyone remembers Phoebe, but local girl June also lost someone that night. Her brother Wyatt has been missing for ten years and, now that her mother is dead, June has no one left - no family, no friends. Until someone appears at her door - someone who knows what really happened that night and who is ready to tell the truth. With a shocking twist that will leave you breathless, Twenty-Seven Minutes is a gripping story about what happens when grief becomes unbearable, dark secrets are unearthed, and the horrifying truth is revealed.

SPORTS NEWS

1st XV Girls On Track to Achieve Season Goals

Their goals for the season are clear: be competitive against Auckland's traditional rugby 15s schools, work hard as a team, and above all else, enjoy the game.

Although our girls entered the 15s competition for the first time this year, their experience in 10s and 7s rugby has certainly given them an edge, if their performance to date is any indication!

On Monday, our girls faced their biggest challenge so far, Mount Albert Grammar. Renowned for girls' rugby in Auckland and across New Zealand the 2023 Auckland Champions and NZ Top 4 Team representative, MAGS commanded respect.

Our girls rose to the occasion and demontrated both their resilience and skill to claim a 32-5 victory. Highlights included early tries by Jaedah Hansen and Asha Taumoepeau-Williams, and a standout performance by Marica Tukana, who scored three second-half tries.

The team now boasts three wins against Epsom Girls', Rosehill College, and MAGS, with only one default loss to McAuley. While they continue to work on a few areas, their commitment to bringing their best performance to every game is clear.

1st XI Boys' Hockey Dominates Season

Congratulations to our 1st XI Boy's who have had a great run so far this season. With another win against long time rivals, Selwyn College (5-2) this week, they now claim 5 wins (Lynfield College 7-0, King's College 7-0, Rosehill College 3-0, and Selwyn College 3-0) with only 1 loss to St Kentigern's College.

Wednesday's game against Selwyn saw our boys get off to a slow start but they picked up momentum 15 minutes into the game scoring 2 goals before the half time whistle blew. That energy continued into the second half as they put 3 more goals into the back of the net.

Well done to Player of the Match, Jesse Stubenitsky (Y10), for scoring his first goal with the 1st XI!

Clash of the Netball Titans!

It was an epic clash of Red vs Blue as Howick College Premier Netball took on Mt Albert Grammar Netball over the weekend at Auckland Netball Centre. HC Premier 2 led most of their game by 6 goals. But towards the end of the fourth quarter, MAGS pushed back to even the score. As the ball moved to the attacking end of the court, HC goal shoot, Zahara Samson-Tuinukuafe, successfully completed her penalty shot, taking her team to a one-point victory of 41-40!

Meanwhile, HC Premier 1 faced their challengers with 4 players away. Fortunately, they were boosted by players from the Premier 2 team. Congratulations to Ariella Vaitupu and Chloe Pratt on their first starts for the team! The girls got off to strong start and maintained their dominance throughout, finishing with an outstanding 52-16 win over one of the toughest opponents in school netball!

AKSS Orienteering Champs 2024

Congratulations to Courage Chang who competed in the Auckland Secondary School Orienteering Rogaine Championships at Totara Park on May 29, 2024.

Courage had just 90 minutes to navigate the sodden cross-country course (luckily the thunderstorm and torrential downpour passed just prior to the race starting!) achieving an impressive 6th place in the Year 10-11 Intermediate Boys category.
