Kia ora koutou,
It has been very timely and important in so many ways that students in all year groups have been able to attend the college, since last week's PPTA decision.
Students like to be at school, interacting with their classmates and friends from other year levels. Orewa College does not function optimally without all students from all year groups being present. Staff fortunately have now got the opportunity to most effectively continue and complete current units of work with their students, before the end of Term 2 on Friday.
With regards to academic catch-up opportunities for students in the senior school, please note the following; - Wednesday 28 June 12.30pm - 4.30pm in the Library - Monday 10 July 9.00am - 4.00pm, in the Library
Please recommend attendance at these 2 sessions. In addition to this a number of departments are offering 'Learning hubs' at the college in the 2nd week of the term break. Details of these will be on the college's website by the end of this week.
I am very confident that despite the various challenges we have all encountered this term, that students at the college remain positive and on track in terms of academic progress and attainment.
Hosting the 'Matariki Cultural Festival' in the Arts and Events Centre on Friday is an ideal way to end the term and provides a reset for the challenges that undoubtedly lie ahead for the remainder of the 2023 school year.
Keep well and safe.
Ngā mihi
Greg Pierce

Uniform Shop - Term 3 Opening HoursPlease cIick HERE for the opening hours in Term 3 (17 July to 22 September) Thursday, 29th June 2023 is the last day of trading for Term 2, 2023 Please note that the shop is open for one day in the first week of the school holidays: Saturday, 8th July: 10:00am – 2:00pm School Ball 2023Last Saturday, on the 17th of June, the 2023 Senior Orewa College Ball took place. Senior students across Years 12 and 13 gathered at the Ellerslie Racecourse for an evening full of joy, music and celebration. This year’s theme for the ball was “One Way Ticket”, with the inspiration of representing the different journeys and destinations that our future lives will take/behold us after school. Close to 400 students attended the ball, and alongside the venue, every single person looked phenomenal.
| | |
| | Decorations as pictured, were designed and produced by senior members of the ball committee, who worked tirelessly to complete and execute the event to a high standard. Alongside them, teachers including; Mrs Boshard, Mrs Wilding, Ms Reihana, and Mr Appleby were pivotal in ensuring the event was a success. Thus, each deserves a massive thank you! |
A particularly special moment was shared, with the performance of the 2023 Leavers Leader's dance, choreographed by Senior Prefects; Holly Briggs-Lynne, Madeline Russell, Cameron Gibson and Inge-Mari Lewis. A celebration of one last dance together. Alongside this, many laughs were shared amongst our peers as a result of the final ball awards ceremony, where students were given the opportunity to vote for their peers for awards, such as Cutest Couple, Dynamic Duo and the Royals/Celebrities.

We are so thankful to have the fantastic photographer Jeremy Hill and DJ Kieran Bell, who made the night even more memorable. A great way to begin the final chapter of our high school journey alongside our valued peers and teachers. Year 7 Catch Up Boostrix VaccinationBoostrix catch up immunisations will take place on Tuesday 27 June 2023 for consented Year 7 students who missed these. Parents/caregivers of these students have been contacted by email. Enrichment Retirement Village Visit | | Once a week the Enrichment Group of Year 7 students go with Mrs Knight to Maygrove Lifecare. The Enrichment Group plays board games with the elderly and sometimes go for walks in Maygrove Park with them. Each student has got their own elderly buddy. My buddy is Gilbert. He is one of the funniest people I know. He is the joker of the retirement village. Gilbert loves gardening and beekeeping but says he can’t garden because if he falls over he will turn into a garden gnome because he can’t get up. He loves telling me about beekeeping.
|
What I have learnt is very interesting. I have learnt about when it's the best time to take honey from beehives, that bees do little dances to tell the other bees the exact location of a flower field, and how far away it is. I feel that going to the Retirement Village is amazing because it means that we can connect with our community and they also tell us about what it was like when they were kids and when they had to bike everywhere and when movies were black and white. Year 9 Readers Cup CompetitionOn Thursday evening of Week 9, a team of 4 new Year 9 students returned to the Readers Cup Competition for 2023 at Te Manawa library.
During the weeks of Term 2, Georgia Sparks, Bhavitha Kotra, Bhumi Patel, Brody Sutherland, Benji Amuimuia and Eva Miseriaux read a selection of 6 books, spending a mix of their own personal time, lunchtimes and meetings taking and sharing notes while quizzing each other. There was a struggle towards the end since two of their team members couldn't make it to the competition, meaning they would have no substitutes for the rounds. They were the smallest team in the competition and were at a disadvantage, but pushed through and ended up placing 7th out of the 11 schools that participated.
Special thanks to Mrs Ellis who coached, mentored and motivated this amazing bundle of bookworms!
Although it was for a competition, we all really enjoyed reading the selection of books. Here are the names in case you are interested in checking them out: Falling into rarohenga by Steph Matuku The Goldfish boy by Lisa Thompson Rebound by Kwame Alexander We were liars by E. Lockhart No fixed address by Susin Nielsen Refugee by Alan Gratz
Article by Eva Miseriaux (Year 9) TrophiesCan students please arrange for their prize giving trophies from 2022 to be returned to Mrs Brits in the main admin office. House Master ChefThe last two Fridays we had Masterchef for Juniors and Seniors. Another year based in the commercial kitchen with all the flash bells and whistles. This gives our chefs all the tools they need to deliver three amazing meals.
Big thank you to the food tech department and especially Mrs Stuchbury for helping support and grow this event over the years.
Like many events in the house system the level of skill increases every year and this year was no different. Students delivered entrees, mains, desserts, cakes and biscuits of the highest skill level, exceptionally presented and of delicious taste.
Not only do the students have the pressure of cooking all these meals but they need to do it under a certain time. Cooking is hard enough as it is without a massive flashing countdown clock and Mr Dickinson reminding the teams that they have 2 minutes to get it finished.
Over the hour and half students fried, boiled, stressed, grilled and baked their way through this competition, we even had a few injuries but they all battled through. Regardless of the obstacles all houses delivered amazing meals and the judges found it very hard to score.
This year the winners of House Masterchef 2023 were Nepia for Master Chef Junior and Sheppard for Master Chef Senior. It's been a hectic but amazing term of house events, thank you to everyone who got involved and supported the house system.
One more term to go and it's anyone's game. Here are the current points and standing; Sheppard - 49 Nepia - 48 | | Blake - 46 Batten - 45 | | McLaren - 44 |

However, they all said it still tasted “Oishii “ (delicious). Careers HubDuring the upcoming holidays students are encouraged to do some work experience or have conversations with employers - Ministry of Education research from 2021 says: Connections with the world of work are important for young people to help them ‘Discover, Explore and Connect’ to their future of learning and work.
All Year 13 students should have had a Career conversation in the Careers Hub by the end of this term. As a result of most having had conversations last year, we have seen an improvement in students having an overall better idea about their future pathway. We will begin appointments with Year 12 students next term and alongside discussing their thoughts & options, we will look at their courses for next year if they are coming back to school.
