Thursday 22nd August | Term 3 Week 5

Kia ora e te whānau,

As the Vice President of the New Zealand Area Schools Association, I have been lucky enough to represent Area Schools at the Rural Education Reference Group (RERG) in Wellington this week. I am also attending the New Zealand Area Schools Conference, an event I help to organise each year as part of my role on the Executive. During my time in Wellington, I had the privilege of meeting with the Minister for Education, Erica Stanford, in her beehive office. We discussed important topics such as school Transport and Curriculum Change. The Conference provided us with valuable insights from keynote speakers such as the Minister for Education, Erica Stanford, the Associate Ministers for Education and Health, David Seymour and Matt Doocey, the Education Review Office, The Centre for Educational Research (NZCER), The School Board Association (NZSBA) and our very own Dr. Sharon Blanchard. I will return to school with a wealth of new information. The conference was attended by members of the Twizel Area School Board and Leadership Team.

Thank you to all the parents, students, and teachers involved in our recent trips and events, such as the Mountain Film Festival (which was kindly provided to our school and students by Twizel Promotions), Skating for Rooms 4 and 6, and the organisation of the North Otago Cross Country which unfortunately was cancelled because of the van transport risk. Without your support, our events can’t go ahead, so we’re really grateful for your assistance. As an additional FYI from our sports organisers, such as Sport Canterbury and North Otago Sports - if a school event is called off due to road safety concerns and there are no supervising/managing teachers at the event, students transported and entered by parents are not competing for Twizel Area School.

Over the next few weeks, we look forward to supporting our learners with more winter opportunities, such as skiing and skating. We’ve also commenced the process for the election of our next Student Representative on the Board of Trustees - students in Years 9 and above should look out for further information coming their way! I hope our Junior Students have a fantastic disco at the end of the week, and I look forward to being back at school on Monday.

He waka eke noa,
Kate Staniford

Community WAKA Award

We are always excited to hear about the amazing contributions our students make in the community! This is your chance to celebrate their positive actions and commendable efforts.👏 Congratulations to Room 13 student Jamiee Pooley for being our first recipient:

Jamiee always visits her elderly neighbour, checks in on him, reads to him and sometimes has a cup of tea with him. He lives alone and we all think if she was recognised for this beautiful act of kindness that she will hopefully inspire other students to check in on their community elders who live alone.

Ka pai Jamiee! If you know a student who embodies our school values like Jamiee, and deserves recognition, please let us know by submitting the form.
