Tai Pari Niureta

20 February 2023

Kia ora koutou,

The effects of last week's cyclone will be long lasting and significant for many communities in New Zealand.  I know some of you suffered significant damage to your property and wish you all the best in your recovery efforts.

What was really pleasing was the manner in which students and staff at Orewa College returned to onsite learning last Wednesday.  They displayed a positive attitude and impressive resilience as once again the start of a school year was disrupted.  Normal daily routines have quickly become re-established and the typical range of events and activities are occurring.

As you are aware, the timetable has been tweaked to include Independent Learning Time (ILT) for all students in all year groups for a minimum of 1 hour a week.  Why?  International Educational Research (e.g. Hattie) shows that several key factors are crucial, in order for students to make significant academic progress.  These factors include consistent feedback from staff, self-awareness of level of attainment and knowledge of strategies required to make further progress.  A high level of trust in the Form Teacher - student relationship is crucial within a collaborative and supportive environment.  ILT provides this and will form the basis for 'Academic Conferences' which will replace the traditional parent/teacher evenings.  All aspects of our students' development and their academic progress will be discussed in greater depth.

The number of scholarships achieved by students at Orewa College continues to increase year on year which is pleasing and reaffirming.

I am sure that we are all looking forward to a lengthy and sustained period of uninterrupted learning at Orewa College for the remainder of the 2023 school year.

Ngā mihi

Greg Pierce
Principal

Rotary National Science and Technology Forum

Ethan Greenwood (Deputy Head Boy) attended the 2-week Rotary Science Forum during January 2023.

Hosted by Rotary, the 180 participants selected from across New Zealand were accommodated at the University of Auckland Waipārūrū Hall, and participated in science programmes across Auckland University, AUT, Massey University and industry.

With sessions delving into areas as diverse as artificial intelligence, bioengineering, chemistry, molecular biology, physics, robotics and more – Ethan says it was a fantastic opportunity to get exposure to topics not taught at high school level, and in turn help decide future career paths. While the days were long – commencing at 6am with pre-breakfast activities and finishing at 9:30pm – that time did include some time off for a volleyball competition between assigned teams, with Ethan’s team coming away with the gold medal.

Ethan has since given a presentation to the Orewa-Milldale Rotary Club on his experience, and is more than happy to talk to any other students who are keen to apply for next years Forum.  The Forum is in its 33rd iteration, and is subject to a formal application and selection process that commences in August of 2023.

Ethan says “if you are keen on science but not sure of which path to go down, this is a brilliant opportunity to explore options and discuss with university lecturers and industry leaders.” It is also a great way to get to know the flow of university life, meeting fellow students from across the country, and for those doing the Duke of Edinburgh award, it also counts as the Gold Residential Project.

Environment Group News

At Ōrewa College we are an Enviroschool and do our best to keep sustainability at the forefront of what we do. We use the High Tide to share stories of what we're doing, or give you tips for how you can live more sustainably at home. This term we are supporting the RAD (Recycle A Device) initiative. This is where old devices are reconditioned and then redistributed to NZ students who do not have a device of their own. We love this on so many levels, not just diverting e-waste from the landfill.
So if you have an old device to donate, please bring it into the specially marked box in Student Reception. At the end of the term, we will donate them directly to RAD.

Guidance - Wellbeing Survey

This year Orewa College is working with a wellbeing team from GoodSpace Schools Ltd to create a more integrated, personalised response to the wellbeing needs of our school.
This will include students completing confidential wellbeing check-ins periodically throughout the year. We will be starting with our Year 11 cohort and gradually rolling out these surveys to other year groups.
The survey is a youth friendly, secure online survey, based on an internally validated screening tool which helps identify students who may need further support.  As a result of the survey, all students with identified needs will be followed up by our Guidance Counselling team and offered appropriate support.

Careers Hub

This year we again have a variety of tertiary providers promoting their opportunities already and there will be various occasions throughout the year for senior students to take up opportunities to hear from and/or attend Open Days and courses.
These all assist our students to have a better appreciation of what is available and what they may want to do when they leave school. All of the opportunities are on our Open Days calendar on Careers Google Classroom.  Students from Years 11 -13 are encouraged to join the classroom with the code frapsx6. This also has templates for CV's & other information regarding future pathways.
One such opportunity this week is a Webinar by the Reserve Force recruiting officer from the NZ Defence Force on Thursday 23rd Feb at 6.30pm.
Job opportunities (Full & Part-time) are often added to our Orewa College Careers Department facebook page.
This year during Tutorial time on a Wednesday afternoon, we are running a drop-in time where Careers Advisors are available to assist students with their CV's, Cover Letters, interviews etc.
In the next week or so, we will begin appointments with Year 13 students - we encourage every student to discuss their thoughts regarding their steps beyond school.
