Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Orewa,

Nau mai haere mai ki te wiki tuatekau, ko te wiki whakamutunga o tēnei wāhanga.
Welcome to week 10, the final week of this term.

Last week, we had the privilege of participating in the Matariki Festival at Whangaparāoa College, a collaborative event dedicated to celebrating the Māori New Year. The occasion featured captivating performances from a variety of schools. Orewa College had five groups perform on the day: Kapa Haka Teina (Middle School), Hapa Haka Tuakana (Seniors), the Female Pasifika Group, the Fijian Bati Group, and our Hibiscus Tuakana combined. It was a remarkable day that attracted a strong attendance from whānau and the wider community, including supporting schools such as Kaipara College, Mahurangi College, and Dilworth School. Orewa College will assume the responsibility of hosting this event in 2025.

Looking ahead to Term 3, there are several key events that warrant early notification. Early in Term 3 we will begin the course selection process for 2025, a crucial opportunity for families to discuss their child's educational pathway and make informed course selections.

Midway through Term 3, we eagerly anticipate our annual sporting fixtures for Senior Tournament Week and AIMS Week (Year 7 and 8). These events are always highly anticipated and deeply cherished by our local community; students, staff, and families alike.

Lastly, at the conclusion of Term 3, we will be conducting our Grading Exams for Orewa College. These examinations are pivotal for our students, providing them with valuable experience in NZQA assessments, providing our students with opportunities to test their subject knowledge, planning abilities, and time management skills under real exam conditions.

In closing, I extend my best wishes to all our students, staff, whānau, and the wider Orewa College community for a safe and enjoyable break during the upcoming Term 2 holiday break.

Nāku noa, nā,

Wiri Warriner
Tumuaki | Principal

North and South Trust and Muldoon's Irish Bar Support Orewa College AIMS Teams and Individuals for Prestigious Tournament

Last week, our Orewa College AIMS Sport teams and individual competitors received thrilling news: our funding application to the North and South Trust, supported by Muldoon's Irish Bar, has been approved.

This grant marks a significant milestone as it will substantially alleviate the financial burden for our teams and students attending the renowned AIMS week long Tournament in Tauranga this September.

The AIMS Tournament stands as a pinnacle event in the National and International Intermediate Schools sporting calendar, attracting over 390+ schools and 12,500+ competitors from across New Zealand and overseas for a week of sports. However, participation in such a prestigious event often entails considerable costs, and lots of fundraising to be had, which can pose challenges for many families.

Thanks to the generous support from North and South Trust and Muldoon's Irish Bar, this funding will relieve the financial pressure on our students and families, allowing them to represent Orewa College without added worry. It underscores the Trust's dedication to our students' success and the transformative impact of sports in shaping young lives.

As we prepare for the upcoming AIMS Tournament, we are confident that our students will seize this opportunity to showcase their talents and sportsmanship on a national and international stage.

Thank you once again, North and South Trust and Muldoon's Irish Bar, for making a significant difference in the lives of our students and for your commitment to empowering the next generation through sports and community spirit.

House Master Chef

Last week we had the annual House Master Chef.

It was thyme again for all houses to turnip and out cook the other houses. Words cannot espresso how spec-taco-lar the meals were!

This was a big dill for all students to be involved and muffin compares to winning this event, therefore students went all out!

For the Seniors, students had $30 to purchase all the food they needed to pre-pear an entree, main and dessert.

House Placings as at the end of Term 2

The Middle School students had to pro-juice four identical pies with a dipping sauce and theme.

This year all meals were shrimply amazing.

Some themes this year were a little cheesy, but donut worry about it they all came up
egg-celent!

I am berry excited to announce this years winner for Senior master chef was Nepia House and for the Middle School Sheppard House took out the win.

Master chef is the last event for Term 2.

The competition was fierce....

Te Hana Te Ao Marama Marae trip for International Students taking New Zealand Experience

On Wednesday 26 June, 31 senior international students visited Te Hana Te Ao Marama Marae and participated in a pōhiri and a wander around the 17th Century village to get a glimpse of how Māori lived pre-colonisation.

Year 12 student Esteban Bauder, from Switzerland, bravely and proficiently performed the whaikōrero during the pōhiri and the students supported him with a waiata they had learned.

The students were well engaged and felt they had learned greatly from the experience.

Year 7 and 8 ASB GetWise Programme

During the past term, Year 7and 8 classes have participated in the GetWise program run by ASB Bank.

This is an in-school program that teaches students about financial literacy.

Over three sessions students learned about how to spend their money wisely, budgeting, and how to avoid scams.

As a Year 7 student, I found this informative because the way they taught through games was engaging and fun.  Special thanks to ASB that sponsor the program and Jono the instructor!

Matariki Festival Whangaparāoa College

Our Orewa College Pasifika students performed as part of the Hibiscus Coast Tuakana group at the recent Matariki Festival at Whangaparāoa College.

It was a wonderful celebration of our cultural diversity and also remembering those who have left us.

Our students represented their own cultures and Orewa College with a high level of excellence performing a Samoan Siva, Fijian Meke and a beautiful tribute in memory of Joyous Hennings, written and choreographed by Leba Hennings.

Special thanks to the Hibiscus Coast Tuakana tutors, the committed parents and family members of our students for all your support and time.

Year 7 Boostrix Catch Up Date

Mana Ora - "Live Lightly"

Orewa College was recently featured in the Auckland Council "Live Lightly" publication.

This article recognises the mahi of Miss Kate Newman and her team of volunteers, after gaining a Mana Ora funding grant.

For Orewa College, the Mana Ora programme offered an opportunity to invest in infrastructure for onsite food production and curricular innovation.

Year 9 Soft Technology teacher, Kate Newman, headed up the project, and has laid the foundations for a food tech and hospitality curriculum that engages students in the cycle of food production and builds their understanding of food waste and food miles.

“They’ve loved the hands-on aspect, loved the doing rather than just the theory. So we garden once a week, cook once a week and do one session on theory. We’re also in tune with the garden – so if the beetroot needs to come out, we’ll use beetroot that day.” Kate Newman

Congratulations, fantastic to see your hard mahi paying rich dividends. Please read the full article HERE.

Business Studies Trade Fair

The Year 12 and 13 Business Studies students held their annual Trade Fair on Thursday 27 June.

The students need to run a business activity as part of their NCEA assessment and it was incredible to see everything come together, as there is a lot of planning and product production that goes on behind the scenes.

There were some awesome products available, from 3D printed framed Formula 1 tracks, to succulent pot plants and dog walking services.

Thank you to all the staff, whanau, and members of the community who came along and supported them.

The Orewa College Community/Cultural student leaders group is proud to join the global observance of World Refugee Day.

This day, designated by the United Nations, is dedicated to raising awareness about the difficulty of millions of refugees worldwide and recognising their resilience and courage.

After communicating with refugees within our school community, we were touched by the obstacles they have overcome and together we would love to help those going through similar struggles.

In efforts to support refugees in our communities, the Orewa College Amnesty International group is running a clothing and book drive early Term 3.

Touka and Rama are sisters who have moved to New Zealand from Syria, they would like to share their story with the community to inspire others to empathise with refugees and consider helping us to support our local refugee centre. Their moving story is told HERE.
