Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Onehunga High School
We’re already well into Term 3 and it’s been encouraging to see students return with a strong sense of commitment to their learning. Classrooms have been settled and the level of participation in lessons has been very positive.
Thank you for attending the Three-Way Conferences. These conversations play an important role in helping students stay on track and feel supported. The partnership between home and school makes a real difference and the connection between students and their kaitiaki teacher is central to that. Please do stay in touch with the kaitiaki as needed.
This is a busy and high-stakes term for our senior students, with many assessments due and derived grade exams ahead. At the same time, we want our students to enjoy the journey, take pride in their progress and stay connected to the wider life of the school. We look forward to the upcoming celebration of our student diversity through Language Weeks and Diversity Day next week. These are important reminders of what makes Onehunga High School such a vibrant and inclusive place.
Course selection for next year is now open. This is a key moment where students should be thinking carefully about their future. We encourage parents and caregivers to talk with their children about their interests and strengths and help them make good choices for their learning. We continue to support students in understanding how NCEA works and we are doing more to help students see what’s required for University Entrance. It’s important that every student understands their pathway and what they need to do to reach their goals.
We also continue to ensure we meet the needs of all students through a wider range of opportunities in 2026. This includes enrichment classes for both junior and senior students, an increased number of subjects offering Scholarship, and the introduction of timetabled sports academy classes. These developments are part of our ongoing commitment to high-quality learning and to preparing students for a wide range of future pathways.
Have a great weekend.

 ![]() Sports News
Term 3 sees all our winter sport restart the last sections of their respective competitions. During the break, Onehunga High School teams were all well placed in their competitions with a number of teams sitting comfortable in the top 4. As well as looking to secure sports in the play-offs, 8 of our teams will also be turning their attention to the upcoming winter tournament week from 24th – 31st August.
Successes over the break include:
- NZ Karate Open & NZSS Karate Championships: 28th-29th June
Archer Linke came away from the NZ Karate Open with a bronze in kumite and no flags in kate. In the NZSS Karate Championships, Archer missed at on the medals in kumite but also had no flags in kata. - European Youth Orienteering Championships
Xavier White has just returned from his campaign in Czechia with the NZ Junior team. The tricky course was very challenging especially the long course in the forest surrounding the host city. Xavier recorded the following times below. He ran the third and final leg and recorded a top 10 time to move Team NZ up five spots in the rankings. Long - 57.43min (66th overall) Sprint - 14.55min (65th overall) Relay - 2:11.31min (19th overall) - Anna Lightbody competed at the National Springboard & Platform Diving Championships and came away with two gold in the U16 1 metre & 3 metre springboard and a silver in the Elite 3 metre. Unfortunately, injuries kept her from competing in the platform grade. While she was unable to compete due to her injuries, Anna also attended the Junior Pacific Championships as part of the NZ team.
- Aidan Grant took part in the Junior Interprovincial Indoor Cricket Championships for the Auckland U15 team. Playing teams from across the country, Auckland fell to Canterbury in the Plate Final to ultimately finish 5th overall.
- Hunter Pert continued his rich vein of form on the rink. Firstly he played for the Auckland White 14U in the 1st round of the NZ National 14U Ice Hockey League, where the team came out in 2nd spot. Hunter then travelled to Hamilton to represent the NZ at the 2025 Oceania Championships. He did double duty captaining the Kiwi Black 13U (Gold) & assistant captaining the 15U side (Silver)! Hunter was named top scorer in the 15U division to cap it off.
We want to celebrate our student athletes and their sporting endeavours. We currently have over 25 Onehunga High School teams competing weekly in winter codes, plus a number that are exceling in sports that we are unable to cater to as a school. With the large number of students involved, it can be hard to keep track of all their awesome efforts, and give them the recognition they deserve. If you have any pictures from OHS games, events or want to share stories of their success in their chosen sport then please send them through to [email protected]

![]() ![]() ![]() Careers Exploring study and career pathways helps students stay engaged, feel more purposeful at school, and grow in confidence about their futures. It was fantastic to see so many of our students at last week’s OHS Careers Expo engaging in thoughtful conversations and connecting with a wide range of possibilities. Congratulations also to those who made the most of the school holidays by exploring real-world career opportunities. Boston Tuiluluú and Taylah Stewart, for example, both completed paid internships — Boston with IT consultancy Theta, and Taylah with law firm MinterEllisonRuddWatts. Jack Graham attended the University of Canterbury’s Maths and Engineering Camp, gaining valuable insight into studying engineering in Christchurch.
With Open Day season now in full swing, it’s the perfect time for students to visit universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary providers. Here at OHS, Term 3 is packed with careers trips and lunchtime seminars, giving students the chance to connect directly with tertiary organisations and employers. Details about upcoming events and activities can be found on our careers website ohs.careerwise.school

School TV - Parent Resource
CyberSafety Series
At Onehunga High School, we understand that parenting in the digital age can be challenging. Many parents did not grow up with smartphones, social media, or constant internet access, and it can be hard to know how best to support young people as they navigate their online lives. We encourage our school community to explore the latest SchoolTV series on online safety, available on our website: https://ohs.nz.schooltv.me/channel-newsletter/315 This helpful series gives parents the tools to: - understand the platforms and apps their teens are using - talk with their children about online behaviour and safety - recognise signs of cyberbullying or unwanted contact - take simple steps to help keep their children safe With most of a young person’s social life now taking place online, it is more important than ever for parents to be informed and involved. Young people may not always share what is happening online, especially if they fear losing access to their devices. This resource helps parents become supportive guides rather than distant observers. The key is not to fear technology but to understand it. This series will help parents feel more confident and connected to the digital world their children are growing up in. We encourage all whānau to make time to watch it.
