Kia ora koutou,
I trust you are well.
From weeks 7-9 we have had an extremely busy but productive period for students at Orewa College.
Over 200 students have been representing the college with pride and passion at, firstly 'National Winter Tournament Week' and secondly the AIMS games. This included students from every year group from Year 7 to Year 13. Some of the results were outstanding but more importantly, Orewa College received feedback from opposing schools which acknowledged our good manaakitanga and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all who were involved, i.e. students, staff, parents and volunteers.
In my opinion the college's mission statement, 'Towards Enriched and Responsible Citizenship' was actively reflected at these events and is again evident this week with students in Years 11-13, continuing to prepare in a professional manner, for their important NCEA 'Grading Examinations' and tutorials/workshops.
Once again a successful House competition has been completed with Batten emerging victorious. It has been encouraging to see a packed Arts and Events Centre for two of the final events i.e. Wearable Arts and Battle of the Bands.
The more students are engaged in the wider life of Orewa College, the more the positive culture overall grows.
A fitting whakatauki for this in Te Reo Maori Language Week is as follows;
'E hara taku tou i te tou takitahi he toa takitini' My strength is not as individual, but as a collective.
Have a good week.
Ngā mihi
Greg Pierce Principal

AIMS GamesLast week saw around 115 Orewa College students make the trip down to the Anual AIMS Games held in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui. We had 10 teams, plus many individual athletes competing which was a great reflection of the talent that we have at the college.
It's an amazing opportunity for our students to represent the school in competition, be exposed to high-level sports, and further their passion for sport. It also creates long-lasting memories through the experiences that they share.
Orewa had some outstanding results across the events.

The Girl's Hockey and Boys Futsal teams claimed 6th place in their respective competitions and also performed very well. Across the board, all of our players should be very proud of the efforts that they put in over the week, showcasing some exceptional talent coming through from our Year 7 & 8 students.

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Play-In | | On Sunday, 10th September 2023, sisters Santhiya Vasanth on flute (Year 10) and Sanjana Vasanth on trumpet (Year 8) participated for the second time in the Community Play-In, under the auspices of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

The APO Community Play In invites instrumentalists and singers of all ages and all abilities to come together for an afternoon of spectacular music-making in the Auckland Town Hall. The 4 pieces were Fauré ‘Pavane’, Fauré ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’, Bizet ‘L'Arlesienne’ & Offenbach ‘Orpheus in the Underworld: Can-Can’. The 4th piece was the obvious crowd favourite! After 2 months of practising the 4 chosen pieces, it was an exhilarating experience for them to play alongside the Choir and 560 fellow instrumentalists of varying ages & expertise. The perfect acoustics within the Great Hall of the Auckland Town Hall made the whole experience enthralling. |

If a student breaches this rule for a second time, they will forfeit the right to bring a phone to school for 10 school weeks and be stood down for two school days. |

Jurassic Art TripIn week 7 this term the Year 9 Jurassic Art students were fortunate to have a field trip to the Auckland Museum, mainly to view the two Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaurs on display. Peter and Barbara are two of the rarest, real T.Rex skeletons ever discovered. Peter is one of only four black T.Rex ever found, and mostly likely died due to injuries sustained in an attack. Barbara is one of only three female T.Rex on record and at the time of her death, was carrying eggs or young.
The students had a great day having a look at not only Peter and Barbara, they also enjoyed seeing other Jurassic skeletons on display. A good day was had by all! |
