| | Nǐ hǎo jiātíng, Kia ora e te whānau,
Welcome to Chinese Language Week, a time for us to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and language of our Chinese community here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
|
As we enter the final week of Term 3, it is a fitting time to reflect on the achievements of our school. We are currently in the exciting process of selecting our future Manukura (prefects) for 2025. The calibre of applicants is remarkable, and I am confident that our next generation of leaders will embody and elevate the values of our kura, taking them to new heights.
This year has been filled with noteworthy celebrations. Our rangatahi have shown outstanding leadership, guiding us through special events and welcoming esteemed guests, such as David Seymour. We have also taken time to celebrate the achievements of our alumni, like Shaun Johnson, who recently concluded an illustrious career in the NRL with the NZ Warriors.
Our Open Night was another highlight, where we welcomed families eager to learn about the opportunities Orewa College has to offer. The feedback we received about our students and staff was humbling. This term witnessed our first representative at the Ngā Manu Kōrero national speech competition. Additionally, the strong presence at senior tournament and AIMS weeks was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, whānau and wider community. Most recently, we celebrated a significant milestone with Year 12 student Anika Pihema making the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ netball team, marking another first for Orewa College. Once again, these achievements showcase the remarkable dedication of everyone in our school community.
This term, we aimed to enhance awareness of Orewa College's achievements by highlighting and celebrating our successes through new channels. We launched our official Orewa College Instagram and LinkedIn pages, in the pursuit to drive greater engagement and connection with our community.
If you have noticed this positive shift, our students and staff would love your support in amplifying our message and being our champions for Orewa College. You can do this by sharing our success stories on social media, follow our accounts, or leave us a Google Review. These small actions can have a significant impact in building a stronger connection between Orewa College and our wider community.
Together, let’s continue to cultivate a sense of pride in our school, working collaboratively to make Orewa College the pride of the district. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment this year. We hope you all enjoy the upcoming holiday break. Xièxiè, Wiri Warriner Tumuaki | Principal Orewa College

A Night to Remember: Gala Concert 2024 |
On Wednesday 11 September, the school came alive with the sounds of incredible music at our annual Gala Concert. The event was a true celebration of talent, dedication, and the joy of music-making. Performances from the Choir, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Senior Jazz Ensemble, Junior Jazz Ensemble, Wombo Combo, Wind Quintet, Sax Bomb, and our Year 7 and Year 8 Bands had the audience mesmerised.
From smooth jazz to powerful symphonic pieces, every group showcased the hard work they have been putting in all year, and performances were nothing short of spectacular. It was a wonderful evening filled with melodies, harmonies, and a shared sense of community.
A huge thank you to all our young musicians for their outstanding performances, and to the staff, families, and friends who came to support them. Your encouragement and enthusiasm are what make these events so special.
We can’t wait to hear what our talented musicians have in store for the future!

Special Olympics BasketballOn Wednesday 18 September, the 'Orewa College Coast Trotters' competed at the Basketball Special Olympics. Our team of seven were ready to show our sportsmanship, skills and manaaki led by captain Ben Francis.
Our first game against the Gremlins (Northcote) started fast and continued with some excellent passing, shooting, rebounding and importantly defense! Pocket rocket Khusboo Heath's evident netball skills made it very difficult for any opponent to get or keep the ball!
Madison Ryan went in for the ball with speed and determination, even hitting the floor in her bid to get the ball. Shade's dribbling between his legs was his signature move that tricked the opposition! Team work makes the dream work and we came away with a win.
Going into our second game against Rangitoto, we knew it was going to be tough! We had been outside practising some drills and we saw they could shoot! We went into the game with the same optimism and energy as game 1 but alas they were too strong! Brian Wilson produced some excellent passing and dribbled the ball up the court. Lincoln Ackerman and Flynn Pitama came on to give a refreshed energy and cranked up the intensity with their positivity.
All in all we had a great time, a win and a loss but more importantly our team represented Orewa College with great manaaki and are really looking forward to the next event, Ten Pin Bowling......bring it on!

Careers HubThis week we have the last of the universities in for Course Planning for the Year 13 students heading out for next year. Dates and times are on the Year 13 Google Classroom. There are still Open Days and opportunities available for students to check out their future pathways - students should keep an eye on the Open Days Calendar on the Careers Google classroom.
Students can also be looking out for part-time work across the coming months as this does assist with future success in the world of work. The Ministry of Education has identified seven essential skills that employers look for, also known as soft skills: positive attitude, communication, teamwork, self-management, willingness to learn, thinking skills (problem solving and decision making) and resilience. A part-time job will teach some of these skills and demonstrate this to employers.
Leah Gates, general manager, employment at the Auckland Business Chamber, says it doesn't matter what the part-time job is. "It's learning to go to work, show up on time, interact with your colleagues and customers".

Technology visit from Kane's Burger ClubThis week our Level 2 and 3 Hospitality Technology students welcomed Kane Donaldson - founder and owner of Kane's Burger Club to come and share his kōrero.
Kane gave an incredibly insightful (and delicious) talk about taking the plunge to open your own business, navigating owning a restaurant in the economy of social media, the rise of smash burgers, and how he walked his journey from discovering the science of burgers during the COVID lockdowns, to now owning a successful burger restaurant.
Our students had a lot to take away, and we are so excited to be able to share guests of this calibre with them here at Orewa College.
A huge tautoko to Kane from us for donating his time to our ākonga (and cooking a delicious lunch for our Technology kaiako) |
Senior International Student ExperiencesDuring the grading exam week, senior international students not taking NCEA exams embarked on several educational day trips to explore our local environment.
They visited Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium, Auckland Museum, and Tree Adventures.
