Term 1 - Week 11

Tēnā koutou

We have reached the end of term 1.  It has been a term filled with a lot of highs, and some emotional lows for the staff and students.  Through it all, we have stuck together and I have been so proud of how the staff and students have coped with it all.  I think there is a bit of a collective exhale among our students and staff around campus at this time of the term, and I know we are all looking forward to these school holidays.

A list of some of the highs from this term can be found below:

Year 9 noho, Year 9 BBQ, Year 9 lunchtime activities, Colours Day, Athletics Finals Day, Ironman volunteering, Whānau Day, Tahitian School Visits, Blood Drive, Summer Tournament Week, Shakespeare Festival, Loads of camps and trips.  We were also able to hand out a $100 Back Door voucher to four different students in our four houses during assemblies this week for winning the Tia values card draw.

Apart from the list above, I know I will have missed other activities/events which have happened throughout term 1 as well.  I am continuously amazed by the number of opportunities our students have here at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College.  If you are a whānau member or teacher who has supported any of the events/activities this term we sincerely thank you.

On the note of thanks, on Tuesday morning we held our Coaches, Managers, and Teachers in Charge (TIC) breakfast in our wharekai.  It was an opportunity for our various sporting volunteers to come together, share kai with each other, and hear about our desires for sport this year.  We are served by a wonderful bunch of volunteers in the sporting space and we are ever grateful for the countless hours these volunteers dedicate to our sporting program.

This morning at our staff briefing we farewelled a few departing staff members and were able to recognise one particular staff member’s service to education in Taupō - 50 years!

Our departing staff and their areas of service are listed below:

Aimee Elliott:  Ongoing resource scheme + supported learning English teacher

Annie Lal:  Teacher Aide and pedagogical leader at our Alternative Education centre

Sue Thompson:  Canteen

Della-May Jones:  Baytrust

Catherine Sunnex:  Digital Technologies (retiring after 23 years service at our kura)

Janet Grey:  Acknowledged for 50 years of teaching service to the Taupō community

We wish our departing staff members the very best for their various journeys from here.  I look forward to introducing our new staff members to you at the beginning of next term.

Our subject/parent interviews take place during week 1 and week 2 of next term.  It’s great to see so many bookings coming through already. Bookings can be made via logging into our website.

From all of the team here at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, we wish our students and their whānau all the very best for the school holidays and we look forward to seeing the students back on Monday 29 April.

Other important panui are below:

New skirt
Starting from Term 2, 2024, we are excited to announce the addition of a straight-style skirt, alongside our current skirt, which is available for purchase via our website, as part of our school uniform options. With the introduction of this new skirt, the older style straight skirt, which has not been available for over six years, will no longer be a part of our uniform. From Term 3, 2024, it will be considered a non-uniform item.  The new straight-style skirt is not currently listed on the Argyle website.

We want to highlight that Year 12 students who currently own the older style straight skirt will be exempt from this change. We understand that requiring them to purchase a new skirt for just two terms would be unfair. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we strive to enhance and update our uniform options to better suit the preferences and needs of our students.

Ngā mihi

Ben Claxton

We are always looking for welcoming families to host our International students.
We have multiple students arriving. Some will stay till December and others are staying for a full year. We have boys and girls, and will always take your preference into account.
All those students are coming to NZ to experience the beauty of our country and the people who live here.
We are looking for homestays, who can be a second family for those students. Who will be able to engage them in their life. The students will need a room for themselves and of course they will have meals with you. The weekly allowance from January 2024 will be $290 per week. We can place two students from a different background in one family, if you can offer two rooms,  but won’t be able to place two students with the same nationality  in one family.
Before we will accept you, the school will visit you at your home and to talk about many practical aspects of hosting a student. We also will undertake a police vet check for core caregivers.
During the students stay you can rely on full 24/7 support from the school, to ensure a pleasant stay.
For more information, please get in touch with Aniek Lenoir on [email protected]
We will be able to send you an information package, and will follow up with a phone call.
